Stephen Wayne Hilliard, known affectionately as Steve or "Tugboat" to his friends and family, has set sail on his final voyage, leaving a legacy of kindness, dedication, and love. Born on December 28, 1953, in Galena Park, Texas, Steve's journey through life was one of deep connections, joyous moments, and an unwavering commitment to his family and career. He cast off for the last time on March 20, 2025, in Houston, Texas, surrounded by the love of his family.
Steve was the cherished son of the late Bernard and Mattie (Woodard) Hilliard. His life was rich with the love of his family, including his life-time love, Laura Guajardo, with whom he navigated life’s waters with his unwavering love. His daughter, Heather Guajardo, was the pride of his journey, along with her love Blake Langley, whom he considered his son-in-law. His granddaughter, Hillary Self, was the beacon that guided him through the darkest nights. Steve was a beloved brother to Sandra Nichols, Cynthia Martin, and Bernard Aaron Hilliard Jr., and brother-in-laws Phillip Mixon and Gene Gunnels. He was predeceased by his siblings, Linda Gunnels, Barbara Mixon, and brothers-in-law, Robert Nichols and Max Martin. His course through life was also brightened by the presence of numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and a supportive group of friends who will miss his steady presence and guiding hand.
Captain Hilliard was a proud tugboat captain, a vocation that was not just a job but a calling. The water was his second home, and he approached his work with a seriousness that was matched only by his love for the open sea. Steve's colleagues respected him for his expertise and his unwavering commitment to safety and teamwork. His presence on the water was as constant as the tides, and his influence will be felt for many years to come in the maritime community.
Steve’s interests extended beyond the helm of his tugboat. A kind and handy man, he could often be found fixing something around the house or lending a helping hand to a neighbor in need. His generosity of spirit was as boundless as the ocean he so loved. Yet, it was the time spent with his family, especially his beloved granddaughter, that was his everything. The moments shared with Hillary were the treasures he held most dear, each one a precious pearl strung upon the necklace of his life.
As we bid farewell to Steve, we take comfort in knowing that his journey was full, his impact profound, and his memory indelible. The waves of his influence will ripple through the lives of those he touched for generations to come. Captain Stephen Wayne Hilliard has charted a course that will inspire us all to navigate life's waters with courage, love, and a deep appreciation for the ties that bind us.
In the wake of his departure, Steve leaves behind a world that is undoubtedly better for his presence.
