William "Bill" C. Benningfield Obituary

William “Bill” Carter Benningfield, 81, of Ellettsville, IN passed away on Thursday, March 20th, 2025.

He was born on December 24th, 1943, in Evansville, IN. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Carolyn Fay Landis Benningfield; a son, Mark Allen Benningfield; his parents, Carter Benningfield and Willie Christine Benningfield Poffinberger; a brother, Terry Benningfield.

Bill is survived by his son, Michael (Angela) Benningfield; his grandchildren, Andrew and Aubrey Benningfield; a loving niece, Valerie (Rodney) Horvat; Valerie’s children who he considered his grandchildren, Rachel and Steve Horvat; a sister Rhonda (Mike) Harvey; and a loving companion, Tammy McKenney.

Bill was a veteran who served in the Navy on the USS Betelgeuse. After 34 years of dedication, Bill retired from Hoosier Energy. He worked for Bloomington Hospital as a security guard where he retired after 16 years of service. Bill served on the Ellettsville Police Department for 22 years where he was a reserve police officer and a Reserve Deputy Marshal.

Those who knew Bill always loved his sense of humor. He was quick to tell a joke and make you laugh at the start of any conversation. Bill was always loving and loyal to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed, but his laughter and wisdom will be cherished in the days and years to come. There is comfort knowing he is finally at peace.

A visitation for Bill will take place on Monday, March 24, 2025, at Chandler Funeral Home in Ellettsville from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. The funeral service will follow with burial at Presbyterian Cemetery.  Military Honors will be provided by the Monroe County Honor Guard.
