JOHN ROMNEY PYPER

Obituary: John Romney Pyper John Romney Pyper, 80, beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend passed away on March 10, 2018, in Boise Idaho. John was born May 22, 1937 in Tucson Arizona to Marguerite Romney and William Raleigh Pyper, oldest son of five children, three boys and two girls. He was raised in Phoenix Arizona attending Phoenix public schools then Phoenix Junior College where he met his wife, Kathleen Derrick and fell in love. John graduated from Phoenix Jr. College in 1957. He then served a two-and-a-half-year mission to Uruguay and Paraguay for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Three months after he returned from his mission Kathy and John were married in the Mesa Arizona LDS Temple, June 6, 1960. He continued his education and graduated from Brigham Young University in 1961 majoring in Secondary Spanish Instruction with two minors: Psychology and LDS High School Religious Education. He taught one year in the LDS Seminary for Bear River High School in Tremonton UT and then went to the University of Illinois, College of Education on a full-time NDEA (National Defense Education Act) fellowship. The M.A. and Ph.D. in Educational Psychology were awarded in 1964 and 1968. From 1965 to retirement in 1996 John was a professor, teacher, researcher, evaluator or administrator at Oregon College of Education, Purdue University, System Development Corporation, founding Director of Weber County Sheltered Workshop in Ogden, Utah, University of Houston and Houston Independent School District. In retirement he taught English as a Second Language to large classes of appreciative adults. John and Kathleen raised seven children, mostly in Houston TX, but also in Elwood UT, Champaign IL, Monmouth OR, West Lafayette IN, and Layton UT. In 1971, the Pypers relocated to Houston TX with their first five children into the developing Sagemont neighborhood. They later welcomed two more children into this world while living at their long-time residence on Sagetrail Drive. They were proud to call Sagemont home for 43 years. John and Kathleen valued education; their children have earned a total of eight Bachelors and Masters degrees. LDS Church activity was consistent through the years in a variety of assignments: teacher, Young Men's presidency, Stake high council, and counselor to Bishop. In addition to serving the Spanish-speaking people as a missionary, he served several times as a stake missionary, Boy Scout leader and Branch President of the Lehi Branch (Spanish-speaking) of the Friendswood Texas Stake for a total of over ten years. John was always a faithful home teacher, blessing the lives of many families. John was energetic and always working on projects. His inquisitive mind led him to learn of other cultures and a wide variety of topics. Avocational interests included music (piano, trumpet) genealogical research, classical and LDS religious research (e.g. Hugh Nibley and FARMS), home repairs, major automotive repairing, automotive painting, gardening and limited study of Arabic and Chinese. John served on the First Educators Credit Union board, now Smart Financial Credit Union. He was active in politics and served as precinct chairman. In retirement days, he was involved in researching and recording family history and in collecting and commenting on societal events directly related to scriptural prophecies. He and Kathleen enjoyed spending time with and caring for their many grandchildren. John and Kathleen moved to Eagle ID in 2014 and resided at Paramount Parks Assisted Living and Valley View Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation. The family appreciates the wonderful care given at both locations as well as care from the All Care Healthcare Solutions hospice team and many other medical professionals in the Boise ID area. John is preceded in death by his parents William Raleigh Pyper and Marguerite Romney Pyper of Phoenix AZ, and his wife Kathleen Derrick Pyper of Boise ID. He is survived by seven children--Marguerite aka Peggy (Scott) Simpson of Eagle, ID; David Kimball (Rhonda Smith) Pyper of Nampa, ID; Daniel Romney (Nancee Lindquist) Pyper of Houston, TX; Deborah Elizabeth (Corey) Hansen of Kenmore, WA; Rebecca Vilate (Paul) Busselberg of Houston, TX and Rexburg, ID; John Derrick (Michelle Spedden) Pyper of Friendswood, TX; Emma Kathleen (Michael) Enszer of Sioux City, IA; twenty-five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers Walter Pyper of Oceanside, CA, Carl Pyper of Monet, MO and sisters Francis Pyper Springville, UT, Pamela Pyper (Rob) Nixon of South Jordan, UT.
