Elaine S. Ficco Obituary

Elaine S. (Tiernan) Ficco, 68, of North Kingstown, RI, died Thursday, December 6, after a courageous year-long battle with pancreatic cancer with her husband and daughters by her side. Elaine was the beloved wife of Guido Ficco and the adored mother of Lori Batista McEwen of East Greenwich, RI and Andrea Batista Garraway of Bedford, MA. Born in Milford, MA, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Jeanne Tiernan. Elaine, or Dede as she was known to many of her childhood friends, grew up in Hopedale and spent most of her life there before moving to Wickford, RI a few years ago. Elaine enjoyed yoga, long bike rides, reading, discussing politics, and traveling. She returned to school later in life, earning an associates degree from Dean College and held several jobs in the medical field. However, she gave up paid work entirely at age 50 to focus on what she considered her most important role, that of Nana to four loves of her life, her grandchildren Michael and Tiernan McEwen and Joshua and Jonathan Garraway. She devoted herself to caring for them, delighting in the ordinary days and, with Papa Guido, taking them on extraordinary vacations from the beaches of Florida to the canals of Venice. In addition to her husband and daughters, Elaine is survived by her sisters, Janette Giuliano of Brewster, MA, Lynne and her husband Charles Salmon of Douglas, MA and and her brother, Mark and his wife Lyna Tiernan of Ayer, MA. She also leaves behind her grateful sons-in-law, Brian McEwen and Gaylord Garraway, her mother-in-law, Evelina Ficco and her brother-in-law, Davide Ficco, of Orbassano, Italy, her nieces and nephews in the US and Italy, and her beloved extended family of in-laws and friends. She was predeceased by her brother-in-law Anthony Guiliano, Sr and her father-in-law, Michele Ficco. Always smiling, Elaine had the unique ability to befriend anyone at any time, from the parents she met at her grandchildrens activities to strangers she met while traveling abroad. Elaine will be missed by many, as her genuine warmth and interest in others made her a favorite of all who knew her. Her funeral service will be held on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at 11am in the FAGAN-QUINN Funeral Home, 825 Boston Neck Road, North Kingstown. Visiting hours will be from 2:00-5:00 pm on Saturday, December 15, 2018. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Save the Children.
