Ronald Gene Petrie Obituary

Dr. Ron Petrie completed his advanced degrees at Oregon State University in Guidance Counseling and Educational Psychology. He was a professional educator for 39 years, working at the local, state, and national levels as an administrator, teacher, and counselor. In 1997, he joined his wife Joanne (Smith) Petrie, founder of One to Another, a non-profit ministry, in teaching Grief Release classes for people who had loss in their life. Ron hosted a radio program with Joanne on KPDQ.

Words written by Ron Petrie, "As I think back on my life, I am struck by the changes in direction, and the return to central focus - Teaching. I started out in 1956 at St. Paul, teaching 7th and 8th graders, and 61 years later (2017) ended up tutoring 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders in the 'S.M.A.R.T.' Reading Program. But the question is, why did I have this focus in my life? Why not business, a restaurant, the military or homesteading in Alaska? Teachers were the people I looked up to, from Mrs. Callahan in the first grade in Cicero, to Henry Tetz and Dennis Baron at Oregon College of Education and Oregon State University. - They encouraged me. They were role models.

As I assumed various roles, I tried to be role models for others under my tutelage. In Upward Bound and the Teacher Corp and HeadStart and Migrant Education, lives were directly affected, and the process carried over to training teachers at Portland State University. I wanted to help make a difference in the world. I hope I did."

Ron is survived by his wife, Joanne Petrie; his daughter, Renee Thompson; his sons Rick Petrie and Daniel Petrie; his stepdaughter, Amy Smith; his grandsons Sam Petrie and Nick Petrie; his step-granddaughters, Jennifer, Mandy, and Holly; and four step-greatgrandchildren.

The service will be March 23, 2025, at 2:30 p.m. at Rolling Hills Community Church, 3550 SW Borland Road, Tualatin, OR 97062. In lieu of flowers, please donate to One to Another, PO Box 495, Clackamas, OR 97015. It will be a closed casket service.
