Thomas 'Tom' Daniel Flood Obituary

Thomas (Tom) Daniel Flood, age 90, of Midland, passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his wife of nearly 69 years, Rebecca, and his five children.

Tom was born on October 28, 1934, in Detroit, Michigan, to Tom and Adeline (Kanarr) Flood. He graduated from Oxford High School in 1952 and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy as a SeaBee for two years, stationed on Midway Island, followed by six years in the reserves. In 1956, Tom married Rebecca, and together they raised their children in Ortonville, Michigan. He retired after more than 30 years with Fisher Body in Grand Blanc, where he worked as a supervisor, and the couple later moved to Midland. They spent over 30 years living on eight acres on Bombay Rd, just outside Midland, where Tom enjoyed gardening, watching deer and wild turkeys, and feeding his beloved wild birds. When his health declined, the couple moved to Primrose Retirement Community and later to Redwood Apartments.

Tom thoroughly enjoyed his retirement years. He took on several part-time jobs for fun and to keep active, with a special fondness for his years working alongside Denny Sian at Ace Hardware in Midland and later at Sanford Hardware. He was passionate about hunting and fishing, particularly with his son Dan and son-in-law Mark. An avid card player, Tom was a master at euchre, pinochle, and poker-everyone wanted him as their partner. In his later years, he engaged in playful $2 bets with his son-in-law David on the outcome of each MSU and Michigan football and basketball game, always rooting for Michigan State University and frequently debating with David to get as many points in his favor as possible. He was a huge fan of Tom Izzo. Tom won more bets than he lost, with the winnings always going to a grandchild to buy ice cream.

Tom’s childhood was sometimes challenging, and he learned early on how to take care of himself. He was fearless, and if he felt someone was being taken advantage of, he could be tough and prickly. Despite this, he had a genuine love for people, and he quickly made friends wherever he went. Tom forged lasting and meaningful relationships with friends, neighbors, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Tom is survived by his wife of nearly 69 years, Rebecca (Becky) Flood, who cared for him lovingly during his many health challenges, and their five children: Daniel (Pam) Flood; Clifford (Ann) Flood; Toni Flood; Rebecca (David) Parkinson; and Corrine (Mark) Bush. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren with another on the way.
