John “Butch” A. Luoma 

ASHTABULA-John “Butch” Luoma, 81, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2025, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home.

Butch was born in Ashtabula Ohio on May 14, 1943 the son of John E. and Elizabeth (Costa) Luoma.

He was a member of the Harbor High School class of 1961.  At age 17, he proudly joined the United States Army and served until 1962. 

On December 8, 1972, John married Wilma Jean Strandman and together they were blessed with 52 years of love and happiness. 

He worked for many years at True Temper until its closing, and in 1982 he started working for the United States Postal Service as a carrier until his retirement in 2009.  He was a past Commander of the D.A.V. Glen Ross Chapter #39, and the past president of the Letter Carriers Union Local #482.  He was also a member of the Ashtabula American Legion Post #103.  He liked playing BINGO and he couldn't pass up buying a lottery ticket or ten; he was also a really good dancer in his younger years.  His main hobby wasn't really a hobby; although he joked it was -"my wife and kids are my hobby”, He loved his family with all his heart.

He is survived by his loving family; his wife Wilma, his children: Michael (Julie) Luoma, William (Patty) Luoma, Leonard (Yvonne) Luoma; and his daughter-in-law Caroline Luoma; 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by his parents John Luoma and Elizabeth Schickel; his son John Jr., and his sisters: Joanne Tobias and Kathleen Mickelson.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at Bethany Lutheran Church, 933 Michigan Avenue, Ashtabula.  Calling hours are from 10:00-11:00 and the funeral will be starting at 11:00.
