Melvin's formative schooling years were at Indiana Avenue Elementary School, Chelsea Heights School and Atlantic City High School. As a youngster, he played for the Westside Little League Baseball team, the Ambassadors. He also played Basketball and Football. Shortly after graduating, he enlisted into the Army. Melvin's ETS was a E-5 Sgt, U.S. Special Forces 5/32 Field Artillery Specialist with Secret Clearance of a Crypto Highest Military Clearance. He loved the Drum Corp World where he was a member of the American Legion Post of Atlantic City. He later joined the Seahorse Lancers of Brigantine Drum and Bugle Core where they became World Champions. Melvin finished his professional career in 2019 after 25 years of service with the City of Atlantic City as the Assistant Supervisor for Facilities in the Public Works Department.
Melvin also loved boxing as a member of the 7 Champs of Pleasantville. He was a Shuto Kan 1st Dan Martial Artist while studying Wing Chun and Gogu Ryu. In addition, he also served as an auxiliary police officer for the Pleasantville Police Department. However, the "love" of his life was his singing group, The Explosions of Atlantic City (shout out to Paul Butts (deceased), Darryl Dato (deceased) and Raymond Poppy Davis and the AC Casino Band 13 pieces.
If you knew Butchie, one thing's for sure, he was a die hard EAGLES fan and he LOVED his Harley Motorcycle. Now he's in all green flying through heaven telling his mom and dad they won the Super Bowl! His motorcycle partners (Pickey, Africa and Doug) will continue to protect his spirit in the circle as they ride.
Melvin, (pre-deceased by his mother and father, Joan and Melvin) leaves to cherish his legacy and memory: the LOVE of his life and soulmate, wife, Madeline Amado Buell; one sister whom he adored, Michele Aminah Buell-Salahuddin; his children: Ocqueem Brooks (Brandy), Melvin Kassim Buell, Kwasi Fletcher, Dion Banks, Charlene, Shena, Robert (Bernadette), Shara (Ryan), and Shawon; one aunt, Shirley Mays; one uncle, Master Sgt. Zaddie Wilkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins, and dear friends.
Melvin cherished and loved his family above all else. He adored children and created memories with them that will be treasured forever. The joy he found in small moments with the brightest of smiles will live on for generations to come.
