Mary Pauline Simpson, 97, of Iowa City passed away on March 9, 2025.


Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM, Wednesday, March 12, 2025 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with visitation held prior to the service from 9 – 10 AM. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The American Cancer Society.


Mary was born on December 1, 1927 in Adair, Iowa to George and Ellen (McCardle) Hickey. She graduated from North High School in Des Moines. Mary was united in marriage to Roger Simpson on September 16, 1946 in Walla Walla, Washington. Together the couple spent 78 memorable years of marriage before he passed away in 2024.


Mary began working at The University of Iowa Business School before retiring in 1952 to be able to devote her life in raising her four children.


She was a longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church, where she also was on the Altar and Rosary Society. Mary was in The St. Bridget’s Band and on the Mercy Hospital Guild as well as being a proud member of P.E.O Chapter KQ.


Mary is survived by her children, James (Becky) Simpson of Iowa City, Kathy Simpson of Loveland, CO, Jane (Robert) Dunne of Libertyville, IL, and Thomas (Beth) Simpson of Iowa City; Grandchildren, Sarah (Tom), Faith (David), Tim, Neil (Shannon), Andrew (Alex), Libby (Michael), Kelly, Kacee, Jay, Allen (Jennifer), and Grant; Great Grandchildren, Caleb, Fia, Elias, Rory, Luca, Clara, Claudia, Caliope, Cora, Bryce, Vivian and Conrad.


Mary was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brother Jerry.
