Johnnie Mae (nee Mosley) Elliott was born September 23, 1938, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to the late Naomi O. (Mosley) McGee and the late John Mosley, as their only child. She transitioned to her new mansion with the Lord at 3:20 P.M. on Sunday, March 9, 2025.
Even though John Mosley was her natural father, the father she devotedly claimed as her “Daddy” was the late Oliver G. McGee, Sr., when he married her mother, along with his six children. This newly formed family moved her to Battle Creek, Michigan, when she was 12 years old. And she lived there until she graduated from the W.K. Kellogg High School in 1956.
Johnnie Mae accepted Jesus Christ and was baptized at a young age at the Bethlehem Baptist Church, under Rev. L.R. Mitchell. She was very active with the Starlight Band, Young Matrons, the Usher Board, and the respective choirs. Later, she joined the Morning Star Baptist Church under Rev. Calvin Harper, who she adored dearly during his pastorate, and was very active with the Senior Usher Board for many years. With the interruption of the pandemic, this caused a pause in her service. In 2023, she wholeheartedly decided to come back into the building and join the rest of her family at New Vision Missionary Baptist Church, with her “son-in-law” as her Bishop. Although she couldn’t continue her Usher Service, she wanted to ensure she had a covering and attended service and Bible Study as often as possible.
Johnnie Mae came back to Cincinnati and on September 20, 1958, she was joined in Holy Matrimony to the late Nathan J. Elliott. To this union, two daughters were born: Kimberly Mashawn Williams (Lawrence) and Melanie Yvonne Elliott. Johnnie Mae was also blessed with two devoted grandchildren, Jazmyne Alexis Ushry (Joshua) and Myles Nathaniel Lee Elliott (Mallorie Wenneman); and four great-grandchildren, London Rylie Ushry, Felicity Ann, Avarie Yvonne and the newest edition, Elijah Nathaniel Lee Elliott.
Johnnie Mae loved her career as a secretary and other clerical roles that she began in 1971 with Cincinnati Public Schools and University of Cincinnati-WGUC Radio Station through OPERS, where she retired after 23 years. She started over as a part time clerk with the YWCA Battered Women’s Shelter, where she retired again after 20 years in 2017.
She was very organized and always one to be matter of fact with everyone. Her favorite sayings were “If you like it, I love it” and “If that’s what you want to do.” Most times, those were said in a spicy way, but you got the gist of what she meant. She was an awesome single mother who raised her daughters to be strong and independent, like her, while spoiling them and the grands in any way she could. She loved to shop and knew how to really shop for the nice name brand clothing, jewelry, shoes, everything for the kids, etc. Mom really had a knack for shopping and selecting Men’s attire. The men who received a nice sweater from her could attest to that. You could easily believe that she had paid a lot of money for her purchases, but she hadn’t, and her style was timeless and classy.
Johnnie Mae loved to travel and trips that she continuously spoke of, was her trip to Hawaii, her trip “across the water” to the Philippines, and the family cruise in 2022. These are opportunities she never thought would happen in her life. She never met a stranger, and we will miss her loving smile and stern advice. She continuously said that she had never expected to live past age 69. God gave her 17 more years than “She” planned. As we can see, it was God’s plan all the time.
Johnnie Mae leaves to cherish her memory: her two daughters; sons-in-law, Lawrence Williams (Kim) and Bishop Stanton Thomas (Deidrea); two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; loving and devoted cousins, Oprah Crooks, Patricia Tillman and Marcia Butler; and lots of loving relatives and special friends.
