William Hopkins Prettyman Sr., a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2025. He was 97 years old.

Born in Wilmington Delaware, Bill, as he was known to many, graduated from Middletown High School and embarked on a life dedicated to hard work and service. His career began as a dairy farmer. He later transitioned to working for the town of Middletown in maintenance. Bill’s dedication to public service continued with his roles as President and Fire Chief of the Odessa Fire Company, where he undoubtedly made a significant positive impact on the lives of others. He concluded his professional career in 1991 as a Supervisor of Maintenance at the Delaware Governor Bacon facility.

William’s life was filled with joy and simple pleasures. He found solace in the quiet moments of fishing; cherished summers spent at White Crystal Beach and enjoyed the warmth of Florida winters. He was known for his love of playing cards with friends and family, creating lasting memories around the table.

He is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Jennie Prettyman; his children, William “Billy” Prettyman, Mary (Dave) Lynch, Sharon Ellwood, and Joanie (Neal) Messick; his stepchildren, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold B Prettyman Sr and Mary Laura Downes Prettyman, all of his siblings; his son, Eddie Prettyman; and his grandsons, Brian Sr. and Matthew.

While William’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, his memory will forever be cherished.

A celebration of William’s life will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at Odessa Fire Company, 304 Main St., Odessa, DE at 12pm. A visitation will be held from 11am – 12pm. Burial will follow in St. George’s Cemetery, St. Georges, DE.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the charity of their choice in his memory.
