George Herman Obituary

GEORGE JOSEPH HERMAN, After a long and well-lived life, George passed into eternal peace on March 9, 2025.

He was born on a farm in Ellis, KS on March 24, 1933 to August & Mary Herman. Being 1 of 10 kids, George told of the chores & strict household that kept everyone in line. They learned good values, how to work hard & be a productive member of the family. I don’t think you got a meal if you weren’t keeping up the pace.

George served his country in the Korean war & later married Charlene Dreiling in 1954 but then moved to Denver CO in 1956 where they began the job of raising a family of 5 kids. George was a smart mechanically-minded guy who worked many trades but machinist was his dominant career choice. He moved his family back to KS in 1976 & settled in the Chapman area. He eventually retired from Ft. Riley as a machinist.

When he moved to KS, he built their home with the help of family members. But it was his idea, his design and much of his energy & initiative that brought it all together. George & Charlene were socially active hosting many family gatherings and also traveling abroad to places like Italy, Germany & Jamaica to name a few.

George not only worked hard, but played hard & he enjoyed the things that life offered him ... gardening, golf, fishing, pinochle, pool to name the main ones. And he was good at all of them. Many locals would know to look for his picture in the paper on the winning team of the weekly pool tournaments. His life was not only well-lived but well-rounded with meaningful relationships & activities in which he involved himself.

George will be missed greatly - there’s no other way to say it.

George is survived by his children Sherry Hooper, Abilene KS; Jerry (Lauren) Herman, Thornton CO; Patty (David) Canfield, Abilene KS; & Mary Beth (Kevin) Buchanan, Bartlesville OK & his brother Kenny (Ruth) Herman of Hays KS. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, grandchildren & great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Theresa Herman Foster & his wife Charlene Herman.

On April 11, there will be a rosary @ 10:30 am followed by a memorial mass @ 11:00 am held at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Abilene, KS. Lunch will follow the mass. A private burial ceremony has been arranged for March 12, 2025.
