John Roger Williams Obituary

John Roger Williams, a devoted man of faith, wisdom, and service, passed away on February 14, 2025, in Dayton, Ohio, at the age of 82.

Born on June 11, 1942, in Dayton, Roger was deeply rooted in his community from an early age. He attended Garfield Elementary School before attending Paul Laurence Dunbar High School graduating with the forever class of 1961 that included graduates from Dunbar, Roth, and Roosevelt high schools. He later furthered his studies at Central State University.

Roger served his country with honor in the United States Army, spending time stationed in Germany. Upon returning home, he embarked on a distinguished career that spanned multiple fields. He worked at Delco-Moraine before joining the Dayton Police Department as an officer. His dedication to justice and meticulous attention to detail led him to become Montgomery County’s first Black forensics investigator—a groundbreaking achievement that left a lasting impact on the field.

Faith was the cornerstone of Roger's life. Raised in the historic Tabernacle Baptist Church, he dedicated his life to the Lord at the age of 40 and became an active servant within House of Prayer and Maranatha Christian Fellowship. His passion for ministry extended beyond church walls—he led weekly prayer meetings in his home, served in prison ministry, and made missions trips to Ghana, West Africa. His commitment to spreading the gospel also included supporting both domestic and international missionaries.

Roger’s love for life was evident in everything he did. He had a gift for making people laugh with his quick wit and storytelling. Music was a constant joy—he loved to sing and often used his voice as a form of ministry and connection. He also had an eye for fashion; thrifting was one of his favorite pastimes, as he delighted in finding unique pieces and transforming them into stylish new looks. He always wanted to know your size so he could find something for you. However, nothing brought him greater happiness than his family. Roger cherished the love of two great wives, his late wife Mildred Ann Williams of 47 years and his surviving wife Freda Ann Williams of 12 years. He took great pleasure in knowing that his children shared his faith.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents King and Mattie Williams; his late wife Mildred Ann Williams; his siblings Frederick Douglas Williams, Eva Brown, and James Williams; his son Steven Williams; and numerous beloved family members who went before him.

He is survived by his beloved wife Freda; his children Marit Walker (Dwight), Theresa Wafer, Michael Owens (Shemika), Michael Williams (Charlyne), and John Phillip Williams; as well as 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sister Wilma Baldwin (James) and several cherished in-laws: Lena Turner, Sarah O'Neal, Martha "Sugar" Bryant, Rebecca Clements, Phyllis Clements, and William Henry; special son William Dei-Alorse (Beatrice), special friends Allen Huff and Shelley Clay and many others who were dear to him.

Roger often reflected on his life with gratitude, saying near the end of his journey: "I've had a great life." His legacy of faith, wisdom, and love will continue to inspire all who knew him.
