Darwyn Worsley Obituary

Darwyn Clarke Worsley was born at the Nipawin Union Hospital on March 9, 1950 to Clarke and Dorothy Worsley. Three years later his sister, Brenda, was born and their family was complete. Darwyn enjoyed many activities in the community including Cubs, swimming, minor hockey and baseball. He spent many winter days at Pinedale rink which was a couple blocks away from their family home.

Darwyn attended elementary school in Nipawin at Central School and Alex Wright School, where his mother taught grade 4. Darwyn graduated from Nipawin Composite High School in 1968.

After graduation, Darwyn entered the College of Education in Saskatoon where he met his love, Kathy Broda, who was training to become a medical technologist at Kelsey Institute. They were married on July 10, 1971. In September 1972, Darwyn and Kathy moved to Kinistino where he taught and Kathy worked at the hospital. This was where he joined the Kinsmen Club which started his passion for helping in his community. They made many lifelong friends in the two years they were there. In 1973, Darwyn and Kathy welcomed their first daughter, Denise.

During the summer of 1974 they returned to Nipawin to the delight of Clarke and Dorothy. Darwyn started working at the newly opened L.P. Miller Comprehensive School where he worked for 28 years. In 1977, they welcomed their second daughter, Andrea. Followed by their third daughter, Heather in 1981.

In 1982, he became the Division 3 Vice Principal where he enjoyed the enthusiasm of the Grade 7,8,9 students.

1985 was a very busy year as Kathy was pregnant twice that year, resulting in their fourth daughter, Robyn in 1985 and finally a boy, John, who was born in 1986. The Worsley family was complete.

In 1991, Darwyn became the principal of L.P. Miller Comprehensive school. He was known to be a fair, fun-loving principal who had high expectations for both students and staff. During his time at the school, he helped organize many events such as the Saskatchewan Winter Games in spring 1998 and the Saskatchewan Student Leadership Conference in fall 1998. He always enjoyed organizing events for the youth and the community.

Darwyn’s motto was “In 2002 I am through” and he retired from teaching. That’s when the fun really began. He was very involved in his community, sitting on many boards and community clubs such as the Credit Union, Handiworks, SARC Provincial Board, the Rotary Club, The Knights of Columbus and Kinsmen/K40s. Being involved in his community was a very important part of his life.

In 2009, Darwyn and Kathy sold their family home and moved to Tobin Lake full time. This was a dream for Darwyn since he could wake up and fish or sled right from his doorway. He continued his community involvement serving on village council and volunteering wherever he was needed. Their home at Tobin Lake became the meeting place for all family and friends. The door was always open and the beer was always cold.

Darwyn and Kathy enjoyed travelling to visit family and make new friends. They traveled throughout Canada which included stops from the East Coast to the Yukon and Northwest Territories to Victoria BC. They always made sure to stop and visit their family along the way. They joined a travel group which traveled the world with stops in Italy, Portugal, Ireland and a Danube River Cruise. For a guy who was afraid to fly he put on many miles in his yellow travelling hat.

Darwyn loved his kids but he really, really loved his grandkids and great grandkids. Grandpa loved to follow the grandkids to their sporting events, dance competitions and graduations. He could always be counted on to cheer their successes and hug away disappointments. He was very proud to share their accomplishments with anyone who would listen to him brag.

Darwyn lived his life full of love and adventure. Everything was a story to tell.

He is predeceased by his parents Clarke and Dorothy Worsley, sister, Brenda Beug (Worsley) and his father and mother-in-law, John and Anne Broda, sister-in-law, Lorna Quennelle (Broda), brothers-in-law, Robert Sample and Robert Broda, niece Amanda Knutt and nephews Trenton and Jay Broda.
