Joseph James Reed, aged 78, passed away peacefully at home on February 17, 2025, in Frisco, NC. Born on July 12, 1946, in Philadelphia, PA, Joseph was a dedicated and honorable man who spent his life serving others.

He graduated from Father Judge High School in Philadelphia, PA, and soon after, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Marine Corps. Upon completing his military service, Joseph continued to serve his community with the same dedication and integrity throughout his career with the Philadelphia Fire Department, from which he eventually retired.

Joseph was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Mary Magdalen Cooper and Joseph Peter Reed. He leaves behind a loving family who cherished him dearly, including his devoted wife, Catherine T. James, and his sister, Barbara Joan Reed, also known as Sister Marie Eugene IHM, and a multitude of dear friends.

His legacy of service and love will be remembered by all who knew him. A memorial service to honor Joseph's life will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at 10:30 am at Our Lady of the Seas Catholic Parish, located at 48478 Highway 12, Buxton, NC 27920. Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of Joseph's life. A reception will follow immediately after the service in the fellowship hall.

Known affectionately as Joe Buck, Joe lived a life of service, adventure, and love for the coast. As a Philly firefighter, he put others before himself, facing dangers most will never know. In retirement, he found peace on the Pamlico Sound, fishing, hunting, and horseshoes—winning nearly every game he played. The moment he let go of a horseshoe, it was a ringer. He swore he could see the elusive green flash when others couldn’t—just like he noticed the quiet, beautiful things in life that others overlooked. He saw meaning in a well-cast fishing line, joy in a perfectly thrown horseshoe, and magic in the way the sun kissed the horizon at the end of the day. He had a way of making the simple moments feel important, of turning the ordinary into something worth remembering. And no matter where a grill fired, the moment the bratwurst hit the coals, he’d somehow appear, like he had a sixth sense for a good meal on the beach.

Now, he’s in the sunsets, the wind over the water, the sound of the waves rolling in, and the quiet moments where the world feels just right. Reunited with his father and his dogs, Hunter and Dylan, he’s got the best view, watching over everyone he loved. He’ll be deeply missed but never forgotten.
