Karen Jeanelle Montee
Karen Jeanelle Montee, born on August 23, 1950, in Joplin, passed peacefully to her eternal home on February 14, 2025, at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.
Born to Virgil Ray Montee and Alline Genevieve (Overstreet) Montee, Karen grew up in Galena, Kansas, and graduated from Galena High School (Class of ’68); she later earned an Associate’s Degree from Labette Community College (1993) and a Bachelor’s Degree from Pittsburg State University (1995). Karen worked as a tax preparer and consultant for over 25 years. As an Enrolled Agent—the highest credential the IRS awards—she represented and counseled large corporations as well as medium-sized and small businesses as they navigated the intricacies of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. She served as Treasurer of the Missouri Society of Accountants and was a member of the National Association of Enrolled Agents and the National Association of Tax Practitioners.
Karen was a committed Jayhawks fan. She was also a dog lover and cherished her rescue dog, Teddy.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Alline, and her three older brothers, Don, Jim, and Richard Montee. Karen’s big brothers were very dear to her, as were her nieces and nephews.
Karen is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, Michael Roberson (Liberty) of Henderson, NV, and Douglas Roberson (Amy) of Leesburg, VA; one daughter and son-in-law, Suzanna Alt (Bill) of Joplin; five grandchildren, Emily, Hailey, Henry, Genevieve, and Reagan; and one great-granddaughter, Amara.
Karen loved her grandchildren deeply, and she was very proud of each of them.
Karen will be laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery in Galena. A memorial gathering will be held at a later date. Online condolences may be expressed at www.derfeltfuneralhomes.com. Karen was a supporter of the Stained Glass Theatre in Ozark, MO, and requested that any donations in her honor be made to that organization (https://www.sgtheatre.com).
Karen’s children wish to express their great appreciation for Ms. Linda Phipps of Galena. A friend of Karen’s since childhood, Linda cared for Karen during her recent illness and stayed at her bedside until the end. May God bless you and keep you, Linda.
