Elm City –

Alben Ray Smith, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away peacefully Friday, February 14, 2025 at the age of 73. His journey began in Portsmouth, VA on February 21, 1951, son of Josephus and Mavis Smith, both of whom preceded him in death.

He leaves a lifetime of memories for his wife, Rilla Smith; daughter, Jennifer Davis (Jeff) of Macclesfield; son, James “Corey” Smith (Natasha) of Apex; sister, Barbara Wooten (Woody) of South Carolina; feline companion, Callie; along with several nieces, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Al was especially proud of and adored his grandchildren, Carla Davis (Nic Gold), Shelly Davis, Faith Davis and great-grandson, Wyatt Gold.

Throughout his life, Al developed a wide range of hobbies and interests that kept him busy. An avid outdoorsman, long distance biking and kayaking were two of his favorites. Al also had a knack for technology, dabbling in constructing and flying RC airplanes, and even building computers. Another skill that he possessed was playing the mandolin, a talent he learned from his special childhood friend, Glenn Proctor. Al will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and his church community at Proctors Chapel Baptist Church.

The family will host a memorial service at 2:00pm on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at Proctors Chapel Baptist Church, 2917 Old Wilson Road, Rocky Mount, NC 27801. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
