Sarah Merritt, a cherished educator, devoted family matriarch, and lover of life's simple joys, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2025, at her home in Rockwall, Texas. Born on March 25, 1942, in Denton, Texas, to Mary and Shelie Granstaff, Sarah grew up with a rich heritage, being the granddaughter of Ollie John and Jennie Mae Camp.
Sarah's early life in Denton was filled with the love of her family and the pursuit of knowledge. She graduated from Denton High School in 1960 as a bright and ambitious student. Her thirst for education led her to earn a Bachelor of Business Administration from North Texas State and later, an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin. These academic achievements laid the foundation for her impactful career in education.
In her professional life, Sarah dedicated herself to shaping young minds as a business teacher at San Marcos High School and Rockwall High School. Her passion for teaching and her commitment to her students left an indelible mark on the many lives she touched. Sarah's influence extended beyond the classroom through her involvement with various associations, where she generously shared her expertise and guidance.
On June 22, 1978 Sarah married Melvin Merritt. They were together for the next 42 years until Melvin’s passing in 2020. Their blended family included Sarah’s son Jamie and Melvin’s children Ginger, Lisa and Paul; their grandchildren Heather Slayton, Patrick Featherston and wife Polly, Josh Slayton, Michael Slayton and wife Mandy, David Featherston and wife Jessica, and Josh Merritt and wife Jasmine; and their 10 great grandchildren.
In retirement, Sarah and Melvin found great fulfillment in serving their Lord and their community. Sarah was a Sunday School teacher and the treasurer for Dayspring Discipleship Institute.
Travel was another of Sarah's passions. She and Melvin traversed the landscapes of America and Canada in their travel trailer, creating memories in the company of their beloved Bessie. Their adventures also took them across the Atlantic to explore the rich histories and cultures of England, Scotland, Ireland, and Germany.
Sarah was predeceased by her adoring husband, Melvin; her beloved son, Jamie Blanton; her mother, Mary Granstaff; her father, Shelie Granstaff; her grandparents, Ollie John and Jennie Mae Camp; and her son-in-law, Ricky Featherston. She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories that will be upheld by her surviving family members, including her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, her brother, Bob Granstaff, and brother-in-law, Billy Merritt, and his wife, Barbara.
Sarah Merritt lived a life marked by compassion, wisdom, and an unwavering commitment to her loved ones and community. Her bright spirit and guiding presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Sarah's memory will continue to inspire those she leaves behind, as they hold dear the lessons and love she imparted.
