Grant Paul Oseland Obituary

Grant Paul Oseland, age 72, of Palo, passed away peacefully on Valentine's Day due to complications of Kennedy's Disease & Parkinson's Disease. He spent the final six months of his life at Ecumen Lakeshore Rehabilitation Facility in Duluth, MN.

Grant was the second of five children born to Lowell & Joyce (Wise) Oseland. He grew up in northern MN on the family farm and outdoors in the woods, which formed a lifelong connection to nature. Grant graduated in 1970 from Aurora-Hoyt Lakes H.S. and in 1972 from the Hibbing Technical College electrical program. In 1973, Grant married a Finnish girl from Palo, Marilyn Pietila. Together they raised their son, Cory, on a 40-acre homestead in Palo.

Grant worked a variety of jobs until he ultimately found long-term employment as an electrician for Minnesota Power. He was a skilled electrician and a proud member of IBEW Local 31. After a 30-year electrical career, Grant accepted a Hi-line clerk position entering timesheets for the electrical line workers when his health prevented him from the physical demands of an electician. He remained at the Minnesota Power Herbert Service Center in Duluth until he became disabled in 2014.

As a member of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Grant had enhanced hunting & fishing rights under the Treaty of 1854. This offered him the opportunity to hunt moose during many seasons the lottery was available. He enjoyed music, fishing year-round, spearing, canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking, archery, recreational whitewater paddling and motorcycles. Grant & Cory shared their time on motorcycle trips until Grant became too weak.

Grant was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Donald; and brother-in-law, Jason.

Surviviors include his wife, Marilyn; his son, Cory (Nina Fredrickson); his granddaughter, Elna; brothers, Michael (Patty); Curtis (Angela); sister, Karen Monsrud; sister-in-law, Brenda Oseland; step-sisters, Crystal, Gail & Michelle; plus an uncle & all aunts, nieces, nephews and friends.

Words can't express the gratitude Grant & Marilyn felt for the endless help from Amber, Linda, Lauren and Dee from the Essentia Neurology department throughout the years. You became like family!

Many thanks to the Ecumen Lakeshore staff who showed patience & caring when Grant had difficulty speaking. You became excellent at "reading" what he needed. We know many of you felt great sorrow with his passing & miss his stories!

Grant's celebration of life will begin with a visitation at 1:00 p.m. and a service at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 17th, 2025, at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia, MN.
