Gary E. Cavanaugh Obituary

Gary E. Cavanaugh, 82, of Gillett, PA, was called to his Heavenly home on February 14, 2025.

He was born on October 3, 1942 in Wellsboro, PA and was the oldest child of William Sr. and Virginia (Spencer) Cavanaugh.

Gary was a 1961 graduate of SRU High School in East Smithfield, PA. He was employed by Hardinge Inc. in Elmira, NY, as a skilled machinist for 40 years.

He was a man of strong faith, good character and much loved by his family. Gary loved to hunt deer, trout fish, and camp with his family and friends. He also enjoyed touring scenic back roads with his biker buddies. Gary was a very supportive grandfather, attending his grandsons’ sporting events over the years.

Gary and Janice toured many state and national parks, in awe of God’s beautiful creation.  Together they founded High Meadow Camp in Elk County in 2006 and are both founding members of Keystone Elk Country Alliance. He was a 60 year member of Bentley Creek Wesleyan Church, where he worshipped God with his family, friends, and neighbors.

He is survived by his loving wife Janice who he was married to for 61 years, sons Brian (Tricia) and Bruce (Karin) Cavanaugh, grandsons Christopher and Colin Cavanaugh, Robby and Colin Carlton, sister Marlane Campbell and brother William, Jr. (Frances) Cavanaugh, who all live in Gillett, PA, as well as several cousins, some from the Wellsboro area.  In-law relatives include Tom Johnston and daughter Julie, Marilyn Mullican and family, Nathan and Linda Morgan and family, and special Aunt Anne Harkness of East Smithfield, PA.

The Cavanaugh family would like to thank several doctors in Guthrie Healthcare for helping to extend Gary’s quality of life for many years.

Gary’s visitation and celebration service will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at the Bentley Creek Wesleyan Church beginning at 10AM with the service to follow at 12PM. Gary’s pastor, Robert Wuethrich of Bentley Creek Wesleyan Church will be officiating, and Pastor Micky Cavanaugh of Gillett Baptist Church will be assisting.
