John Gilbert Johnston, 91, passed away on February 14, 2025, at the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center in Altoona. He was born August 29, 1933, the son of the late Earl S. and Helen V. (Myers) Johnston.
He is survived by sons John D. Johnston of Pennsylvania Furnace and Paul M. Johnson and wife Paula of Warriors Mark, daughter Carolyn Parcher of Mill Hall, grandchildren Samuel P. Johnston and Cristen Stump Henry, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by sister Mary L. Weaver, brother-in-law Clarence E. Weaver, brother Charles L. Johnston, and son Michael E. Johnston, all of Warriors Mark, and former spouse Helen Taylor Johnston of Pennsylvania Furnace.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1953 and proudly served with the 1st Infantry Division in Bamberg, Germany. After returning home to Marengo he began his career as owner of Johnston Mobile Feed Milling Company serving the farmers of Huntingdon, Blair, and Centre Counties, as owner of Tyrone Milling, and was employed at Penn State University, Aqua Penn Water, and K-Mart as well as working on the family farm.
After retirement his favorite pastime for many years was daily lunch at the Spruce Creek Tavern, visiting with friends and neighbors, and watching westerns on TV. He was a lifetime member of the Tyrone Elks Lodge #212.
Friends will be received on Sunday, February 23, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bruce E. Cox Funeral Home, 3784 Warriors Mark Path, Warriors Mark, PA. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
