DARRYL PHILLIPS GILLAND
Darryl Gilland, 84, passed away Friday, February 14, 2025, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born October 24, 1940, in Charlotte, NC, he was a son of the late Ralph Henderson Gilland and Gertrude Phillips Gilland. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Ralph Lynwood Gilland, his son Michael David (Butter) Gilland, along with his faithful companion of 14 years, his Boykin Spaniel Eddie.
Darryl married the love of his life, Elizabeth Young (Liz) on his 24th birthday, October 24, 1964 – an anniversary he would always remember, true to his style. They celebrated their 60th Anniversary and his 84th Birthday on a Caribbean cruise. A graduate of East Mecklenburg High School, he continued his education at Kings College in Charlotte, earning a degree in accounting. He proudly and honorably served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves from 1960-1966; and is a member of the American Legion Post 178, Murrells Inlet, SC.
Before relocating to Surfside Beach from Charlotte in 1976, Darryl worked as a property manager for his uncle, Dwight Phillips, a major commercial developer. Upon moving to Surfside Beach, he worked as Circulation Director for The Sun News and later became a District Sales Manager for the Charlotte Observer. He retired from Knight Ridder Publishing in 1996. After retiring, Darryl went on to own three businesses - A Bonding Co., Gilland Bonding Co., and the Goodshop Lollipop located in the Outlet Park Mall. He also worked at Myrtle Beach Resort for 10 years as a Lieutenant in security.
Darryl & Liz were avid boaters on the Intracoastal Waterway for many years, enjoying time spent with family and friends. They would spend most weekends in the water teaching their children different water sports and beaching the boat for picnics and cookouts with friends. Occasionally groups of boating friends took weekend excursions on the water, going to Southport or Georgetown.
He & Liz enjoyed spending time at their getaway at Tansi Village on Saint Helena Island, SC where they made many good friends – “Living the Dream.” Golf cart rides were a big form of entertainment, with his Boykin Eddie riding in the center seat greeting all the neighbors.
Darryl is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Liz; daughter Missi (Brad) Collins; grandchildren T.J. Gillenwater, Madison (Tyler) Conover and Rivers Gilland; one great-granddaughter, Vivian Elizabeth Conover; his beloved sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor & Jay Dixon; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, February 23, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Burroughs Funeral Home, 3558 Old Kings Highway, Murrells Inlet, SC. Visitation will follow immediately after the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to Tunnel to Towers Foundation in Darryl’s memory.
