Michael Sheridan Obituary

Michael William Francis Sheridan, born on July 29, 1950, in Cortland, New York, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2025. Surrounded by the love of his family on his last day, he left this world as he lived in it—courageously, with humor, and deeply loved.

A fierce protector of the underdog, Michael grew up with a wit and charm that made him unforgettable to anyone who knew him. He was a young man of intellect and humor, known for his kindness and unwillingness to tolerate injustice or bullying. He entered the Navy as a young adult and served as a medic during the Vietnam War, stationed in Philadelphia -- a testament to his aptitude, bravery and compassion for others.

Michael married his beautiful, loyal, and loving wife, Karen (Searfoss) Sheridan, with whom he shared 54 years of marriage. Together, they built a life atop the hill on Skyline Drive in Morrisville, New York, raising five children: Lisa Sheridan Crane (William) (who preceded him in death in 2019), Ann Sheridan Angle (George), Michael J. Sheridan (Sarah), Katherine Elizabeth Sheridan, and Jeffrey Sheridan (Katie Bartolotta). Michael was a devoted father who taught his children to be strong, intelligent, and loving individuals. His legacy extends to his cherished grandchildren: Sheridan and Chance Crane, Mickey and Murphy Sheridan, Katie, Brooks and Leo Angle. He had a close relationship with his son-in-law, William D. Crane.

An educator, prolific writer, and poet, Michael earned his bachelor’s degree in English from Empire State College while recovering from open-heart surgery, an achievement that spoke to his resilience and determination. He went on to tutor students in the Educational Opportunity Program at Morrisville College, where he inspired many with his passion for connecting with students from all walks of life. In his 60s, he continued to make an impact as a substitute teacher in Syracuse City Schools, bravely facing new challenges with enthusiasm.

Michael was a man of many trades. Often working two jobs to support his family, he was known to sometimes start his mornings at Barker Brook Golf Course, where he pursued his love of golf with humor and perseverance—occasionally hitting a tree or two…with his head. A phenomenal athlete, he inspired his children to work hard and excel, never settling for mediocrity.

He was a devoted husband, always by Karen’s side, sharing a lifetime of love, laughter, and unwavering loyalty. He loved nothing more than relaxing in his chair next to his wife, holding her hand, watching his favorite shows, or enjoying a well-done New York-style pizza. A lover of music, Michael passed down his passion for the arts to his children, introducing them to the sounds of Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Tom Waits, John Prine, and more.

Michael was born to Elizabeth “Betty” O’Shea (formerly Betty Sheridan) and Melvin C. Sheridan, who passed away when Michael was just 18 years old—a loss that shaped him profoundly. He was one of six children, predeceased by his brother Charles and survived by his siblings Joseph, Timothy, John, and his sister Katie, with whom he shared a deep and special bond. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and countless friends from Cortland, Morrisville, and beyond.

He loved walking through Stoney Pond and found joy in simple pleasures. Michael was witty, interesting, and eccentric, with a one-liner ready to command any room. Handsome, sweet, and affable, he shared his kindness, empathy, and humor freely, touching the lives of many.

Above all, Michael was a man who overcame great challenges and taught his children to do the same. His strength and perseverance carried his family through their most difficult times, especially after the loss of his eldest daughter, Lisa, in 2019. His legacy is one of resilience, love, and laughter.

Michael William Francis Sheridan was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His influence endures through the memories and love he leaves behind. He is now at peace, remembered as a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and inspired all who knew him.

In lieu of services and flowers, contributions can be made in his memory to American Heart Association (AHA), American Stroke Association, or CancerCare.org.

May his memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 31 Cedar St., Morrisville, NY 13408.
