Jim Spinks Obituary

James Ray “Jim” Spinks, Jr., 74, of Alabaster, passed away on February 14, 2025, at Shelby Baptist Medical Center.

He was born on May 1, 1950, in Thomasville, AL. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Ray and Kathleen Lowry Spinks of Sunny South, AL.

He is survived by his loving wife, Blanche Agee Spinks; his daughter, Katie Spinks of Helena, AL; and his son, James Spinks (Molly) of Vestavia Hills, AL, along with their children, Sheffield and Bowen. He is also survived by his brother, Dick Spinks (Carla) of Powell, WY, and his sister, Anne Spinks Gibson of Thomasville, AL.

Jim was a graduate of Pine Hill High School, Class of 1968, where he served as class president. He went on to attend Auburn University before later enrolling at Livingston University, where he became a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity.

He built a long and fulfilling career, working as a truck driver both before and after his years as a salesman at Alabama Wholesale Company. Whether hauling loads across the country or making shorter runs, Jim loved the road and took great pride in being an owner-operator. Trucking was his true passion, and he found great joy in the independence and adventure.

Jim was known for his loud voice and friendly personality, always making his presence known with a warm greeting and a hearty laugh. He never met a stranger and had a way of making people feel welcome wherever he went.

Before moving to Alabaster, Jim and Blanche lived most of their lives in Thomasville, where they were active members of Thomasville Baptist Church and dedicated supporters of Thomasville High School sports teams. Whether cheering in the stands or lending a helping hand, they were proud to be part of the community.

In Alabaster, Jim and Blanche became known for their hospitality, hosting friends and neighbors for Sunday lunch, where there was always plenty of food and laughter to go around. Their home was a place of warmth, good conversation, and a meal shared with love. Conecuh sausage was always a staple at their Sunday table, adding to the tradition of good food and fellowship.

A man of faith, Jim was a longtime member of Westwood Baptist Church in Alabaster, where he served as a deacon, a role focused on serving others. He also enjoyed volunteering at Harvest House, a mission within Westwood Baptist Church, where he regularly gave his time to help those in need.

Jim took great pride in his renowned bucket garden, which produced an abundance of tomatoes, squash, zucchini, peppers and more. He and Blanche made pepper jelly, squash pickles, and zucchini bread from their harvest and generously shared them with friends, family, and anyone who stopped by. Their home was always filled with the joy of giving, and Jim loved passing out the fruits of his labor.

Jim had two beloved dachshunds, Gizmo and Pistol Pete, who were his loyal companions. They were always by his side in his recliner bringing him joy and companionship.

A graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Pine Hill Cemetery in Pine Hill, AL. On Tuesday, February 25, 2025, there will be a visitation at 1:00 PM followed by a Celebration of Life service at 2:00 PM at Westwood Baptist Church in Alabaster.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Harvest House at Westwood Baptist Church (1155 Alabaster Blvd, Alabaster, AL 35007) or a charity of your choice in Jim’s memory.

Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
