Richard William Horzelski, known affectionately as Rich, passed away on February 14, 2025, at the age of 84, in Wayne, Michigan. Born on March 31, 1940, in Marquette, Michigan, to the late Joseph and Stella Horzelski, Rich lived a life marked by devotion to his family, a passion for his interests, and a generous spirit that touched all who knew him.
Rich's journey began in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. His early years were shared with his sister, Lillian Gillis, and his late brother, Joseph Horzelski. Rich's life was one of steadfast loyalty, a trait he carried into his own family life. He met his beloved wife, Margo, through mutual friends, and their love story blossomed into a marriage of 59 years, celebrating their union on December 4, 1965. Together, they raised two daughters, Danielle Hecox, married to David, and Brooke Jones, married to Micah. His role as a grandfather to Rachael, Emily, Andrew, Nolan, and Rhea brought him immeasurable joy.
A man of simple pleasures and deep passions, Rich was an ardent Detroit Lions fan, dedicating a room in his home to the memorabilia he collected over the years. His love for animals was evident in his affection for dogs and cats, and while he may not have been a big hugger, his presence was a comforting assurance of unwavering support and protection for his loved ones.
Rich's zest for life extended to the outdoors; he was a big walker, enjoying long strolls where he would often collect various items, such as Marlboro Miles, which he accumulated with enough enthusiasm to earn various rewards. His adventurous spirit found joy in the occasional trip to the casino, where he relished playing the slots. A lover of card games, Rich spent many an evening playing Pinochle, Rummy, and Poker, sharing laughter and camaraderie with friends and family.
Described as loyal, generous, and opinionated, Rich approached life with a wisdom that guided his actions and advice. He never meant harm with his words, and his opinions were always delivered with respect and kindness. Those who knew Rich were fortunate to experience his generosity firsthand, as he never hesitated to extend his help to those in need.
Rich's legacy is one of love, wisdom, and strength. His unwavering support for his family, passion for his interests, and the generous spirit he shared with the world will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a family that cherishes every memory, a collection of Lions memorabilia that speaks to his enduring fandom, and a community that was made better by his presence.
