Virginia Lee Ogle Sowell, age 86, of Coldwater, MS passed away peacefully on February 14, 2025. She was surrounded by family and loved ones, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, love, and cherished memories.
She was born on November 26, 1938, in Senatobia, MS. Virginia was the beloved child of Harold and Christine Ogle. She was the second of four daughters, Joy Miller, Bonnie Washington, Linda Lindstrom. She grew up in Senatobia, MS. Virginia graduated from Senatobia High School and during that time she was an active member of the 4-H Club, Glee Club, and basketball team. She attended Northwest Junior College for a year. She met the love of her life Jimmy in 1956, and they married in 1957. She later attained her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Mississippi, where she was a member Phi Beta Kappa. She was a teacher at Coldwater and Hernando Elementary schools before accepting positions on the faculty of Northwest college. She became the Director of Student Support Services, retiring in 2002.
Throughout her life, Virginia was known for her extraordinary generosity, sense of humor, dedication to her family and friends. She was an active member of her community in various organizations such as the Senatobia Culture Club and National Society Daughters Of The American Revolution. She was a long devoted member of the Coldwater Church of Christ. She contributed her time and talents in various meaningful ways, but her favorite thing to do was supporting her husband, Jimmy. She was a dairy farmer’s wife and a support system for him during his responsibilities on the Board of Supervisors as well as President of the North Delta Planning and Development District. She and Jimmy traveled all over the United States together. The love they shared was incomparable.
Virginia is survived by her beloved husband James Burnett “Jimmy” Sowell and son James Thomas “Tommy” and wife Wanda “Kay” Sowell. Her precious daughter Deborah “Debbie” Sowell Hindman, sister Joy Miller, and grandson Kenny Phillips, greeted her at heaven’s gate. She received a lifetime’s worth of love and support from Arthur “Tootalou” and Earlene “Lene” Boyd. She leaves behind her three granddaughters, Casey Billingsley (Cameron), Mary Sowell, Roxanne Veazey (Dusty), and grandson Jay Hindman. She was an amazing grandmother who was a part of all her grandchildren’s lives. She has seven great grand children, Ben, Blade, Easton, Wade, Caroline, Logan, and Tate. Many nieces and nephews, numerous great nieces and nephews, along with countless friends and community members who will forever remember the impact she made in their lives.
A service to celebrate Virginia's life will be held on Tuesday, February 18th, with visitation at 11 am and services following at noon at Pate-Jones Funeral Home (Senatobia). Family and friends are invited to attend and share their memories.
The world is a little less bright without Virginia's presence, but her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
