Smita Jayprakash Shah Obituary

Dr. Smita Jayprakash Shah, age 79, of Wheaton, passed away on February 14, 2025, joining her beloved parents on the anniversary of her own mother’s passing—39 years to the day. Even in her final moments, her timing reflected the deep bonds of love and family that defined her life.

She leaves behind a legacy of unwavering love, tireless service, and deep wisdom that will forever guide those fortunate to know her.

She was a pillar of strength. Tough as nails. Smart and funny. And when she laughed, she laughed with her whole body, her belly shaking with joy.

Born in Gujarat, India, she carried the values of her heritage with pride, embodying the virtues of dharma (duty), seva (service), and shraddha (faith). A dedicated physician, she served her patients with compassion and expertise, practicing medicine until she could no longer stand—a testament to her commitment and resilience. Her sharp mind and strong will were matched only by her boundless love for her family.

A devoted wife of 53 years to Jay Shah, sharing a partnership built on love, mutual respect, and unwavering support—together they built a home filled with warmth, tradition, and a deep sense of samskara (values).

She was a mother in every sense to Viraj Thakore, Sneha Vaish, and Vishal Shah. Her love continued to grow when she inherited her loving sons-in-law Manish Thakore and Shantanu Vaish, and daughter-in-law Jessica Shah as she embraced them as her own. As a grandmother to Prannoy Thakore, Raheel Thakore, Syrani Vaish, and Sajan Vaish, she showered them with wisdom, humor, and boundless affection.

She was an amazing sister to Amit Thakore and a number of other cousins, brothers, and sisters, whom she remembered often.

She was an aunt to more than 50 nieces and nephews and a friend to all; her heart had no limits. She loved fiercely and without hesitation.

Her antim sanskar (final rites) will be held on February 17th at Bucaro Funeral Home where family and friends will come together to honor her extraordinary life. A shanti path (prayer for peace) will follow, offering blessings for her onward journey toward moksha (liberation).

Heaven gained an angel today. Watch over us, Mom, because we will never stop needing you. Om Shanti.
