HURLBURT, Judith (Judy) Helen (nee Deeks), daughter of the late George Campbell & Flora Catherine Deeks (nee Featherstonhaugh), passed away peacefully surrounded by her daughters, Cathie and Wendy, on Monday, June 22nd 2015 at Vancouver General Hospital, at the age of 79. Judy is survived by her daughters, Catherine (Michael Berton) and Wendy (Michael Southey) and grandchildren Margaret, Emma & Sarah Berton & Caitlyn, Campbell & Emily Southey and her brother, Bill Deeks and his wife Julie, and many nieces and nephews. She was adored and very close to the entire Deeks clan. She was predeceased by her loving husband Richard English Hurlburt. Judy attended Bishop Strachan School, Pine Manor College and the University of Western Ontario where she made lifelong friends. After Dick’s passing in 1983, Judy returned to the workplace devoting herself to her many responsibilities at Roots Canada in a lifelong career that she loved. In addition, she served for countless years on the boards of the Ojibway Club and the Ojibway Historical Preservation Society, dedicated to supporting the preservation of the community of Pointe au Baril that she so loved. Short in height, she was tall in stature. Judy had incredible energy and was always enthusiastically on the go. An extra-ordinary woman who worked tirelessly at everything she did, making everyone feel special, motivated by the smiles of gratitude she received in return. From the Junior League, CNIB, the Ojibway Club and North Toronto Skating Club, to her 30 year career at Roots Canada, she gave all of herself with passion and dedication. While Toronto was her home, she was happiest at her beloved cottage on Georgian Bay in Pointe-au-Baril spending time with her family and friends. She could be found in her Hide-a-way kitchen with her grandchildren making her famous blueberry pies, or equally adored cheese dreams. After the summer months, she loved travelling to BC to visit her extended BC family and grandchildren where she would attend their various performances, athletic events, and school activities. The family wishes to extend our deepest gratitude to the all the amazing staff at the Vancouver General Hospital. A service was held in Vancouver on June 25th and a memorial service will be held in Toronto on July 27th at 1pm at Grace Church on the Hill. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Ojibway Historical Preservation Society or Vancouver General Hospital neurology or palliative ward.
