John Gills

John Edward Gills, age 70, of Hickory Corners, MI went to be with the Lord on December 11, 2015. John was born April 25, 1945, in Capels, West Virginia, the son of Tom and Lola Gills and spent his childhood and early adult years in West Virginia. John came from a large family and was the youngest of ten children. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Mary Ellen and Macie; and his brothers, Freeman, James, and Claude. John’s family was blessed with many stories of his childhood memories growing up in the mountains of West Virginia. John had two children from a previous marriage, Tammy Marie (Gills) Howard and Gary Edward Gills who both preceded him in death. John moved to Michigan, where he met his wife Diane and they were married February 8, 1998. Together they had a well blended family. John loved to travel south to see his family, loved the outdoors, cooking, and telling stories. He was currently employed at Walmart on Gull Road. John is survived by his wife of seventeen years, Diane Gills; his son: Thomas John “TJ” Gills; his daughters: Jessica (Ryan) Parnaby and Michelle ( Jordan) Tyler, six grandchildren, one great grandson, sisters: Lois (Bob) Wingard, Dorothy (Martin) Howard, Betty Lou (Rev. Dewey) Russ, and Faye Tolbert; his parents-in-law, John and Cheryl Westbrook; his brothers-in-law, Bruce (Julie) Westbrook, Eric Westbrook, and Mike (Lee) Westbrook; and several nieces and nephews. John’s family will receive friends Monday, December 14, 2015, 5:00 – 8:00 PM, at Solid Rock Bible Church, 7025 Milo Road, Delton, where his funeral service will be conducted, Tuesday, December 15, 2015, at 11:00 AM. Pastor Roger Claypool will be officiating. Burial will take place in East Hickory Corners Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to West Michigan Cancer Center, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or Hospice of Southwest Michigan will be appreciated.
