Rev. Richard J. Broderick Obituary

DELMAR Rev. Richard J. Broderick, 75, formerly of Cambridge died Thursday December 10, 2015 at St. Peter’s Hospice. Born in Cohoes he was the son of the late James and Mary Jacon Broderick. Father Broderick was a 1958 graduate of Keveny Memorial Academy, a 1960 graduate of SUNY Farmingdale. He did his seminary formation at Mater Christi Seminary in Albany and of Mt. St. Mary Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 30, 1970 by Bishop Edwin Broderick at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.


After ordination Rich had a summer assignment at Sacred Heart in Cairo. He was then assigned as associate pastor at St. Thomas in Delmar in 1970 and served there for seven years. In 1978 he was assigned to work with the Spanish Apostolate while residing at St. Michael’s in Amsterdam. In 1987 he served as Administrator of Blessed Sacrament Church in Hague and soon after also as Administrator of St. John the Baptist in Chestertown where he oversaw the pastoral planning process in the area. In 1994 he was appointed pastor of St. Mary’s Church – Crescent where he served for five years.


Rich always had great affection to those who were most vulnerable. He ministered in Guatemala in the Pueblo to People Project of Accompaniment for many years. He was instrumental in developing the Sister Diocese Project which joined parishes from the northern hemisphere with those of the south to work for the common good of both. Rich had an ongoing jail ministry in Schenectady and Rensselaer Counties. In his retirement he was active in “Unbound” (formerly The Christian Foundation for Children and the Aged) which seeks to bring help and comfort to those living in poverty.


Father is the brother of James Broderick (Carol Brumbough) of Rapid City, SD and Mary Ann Ringler (Joseph) of Delmar. He is the uncle of Heather and Joseph Ringler of Delmar, Paul Broderick of Rapid City SD and Sara Cordes of Stafford, VA and great uncle of Kenadie Broderick and Aurora Cordes..


The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 11 am Wednesday Dec. 16, 2015 at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Delmar with Most Rev. Edward B. Scharfenberger Bishop of Albany as the principal celebrant.


The family will receive guests at St. Thomas Church on Wednesday, prior to the Mass, from 9 a.m. until 10:45 a.m.
