Msgr. Joseph F. McCahon Obituary

Monsignor Joseph McCahon, Colonel USAF (ret.), a dedicated priest, military chaplain, and avid sports, music, and film enthusiast, passed away on February 4, 2025, at the age of 81. A Philadelphia native, McCahon was a fixture in the lives of countless individuals, both in his spiritual and military careers, leaving behind a legacy of service, faith, and resilience.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, McCahon had a deep love for music, sports, and movies from a young age. As a teen, he was a regular attendee of American Bandstand, a hallmark of the city’s vibrant music scene. His passion for music was matched only by his unwavering devotion to his hometown’s teams. An enormous fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies, McCahon carried the spirit of his city with him wherever he went. In addition to his love of music and sports, McCahon was also a passionate film aficionado. He enjoyed exploring the art of cinema, whether it was classic films or the latest releases, always eager to share his favorite movies and discuss the impact of storytelling on society.

McCahon’s journey to the priesthood was anything but conventional. After earning an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1967, he enlisted in the Air Force, serving as a budget comptroller. His service took him to multiple assignments across the globe, including England, Germany, and Hawaii, where he experienced firsthand the changes and challenges of military life. After completing his active duty, McCahon felt a spiritual calling and entered seminary, eventually becoming ordained as a priest for the Diocese of St. Petersburg.

With a deep commitment to both his faith and his military background, McCahon spent over 30 years as a full-time military chaplain, rising to the rank of full colonel. His assignments and experiences made him adept at adapting to ever-changing environments, and he offered counsel to military families facing unique stresses—long deployments, reunions, and the challenges of military life.

Just months into his retirement, McCahon returned to parish life as the parochial administrator at St. Mary Catholic Church in Lake Magdalene. His years of service in both the military and as a priest had prepared him well for the diverse community at St. Mary, where he brought his broad experience in ministering to people from all walks of life. His predecessor, Father Bob Morris, noted that McCahon’s background was an asset in meeting the diverse needs of the parish.

A man of great faith and service, Monsignor McCahon will be remembered for his adaptability, his devotion to his parishioners, and his enduring love for his family, his community, his beloved Philadelphia teams, and his many passions, including music and film.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Martha McCahon and Joseph McCahon Sr., as well as his sister, MaryAnne Kelly. He is survived by his brother-in-law, George Kelly; nephews Terry Kelly, Brian Kelly, and Chris Kelly; and his niece, Megan Kelly. He will be deeply missed by his many friends, colleagues, and loved ones, all of whom were touched by his unwavering commitment to service and his joyful spirit.

Funeral Mass will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, February 18, 2025 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Tampa, FL.  Burial will be in Pennsylvania.
