Marvin Ray Hitchings

Marvin Hitchings, age 76, of Ames passed away January 29, 2025 at the Israel Hospice House with family at his side. His wishes were to be cremated and a private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

Marvin Ray Hitchings was born on June 2, 1948 to Marion and Alice (Chinn) Hitchings of Zearing, IA, he was the youngest of 5 children. Marv attended school in Zearing and graduated from NESCO High School in 1966.

In 1967, Marv joined the United States Navy serving on the USS San Diego until September 1971. He then enrolled at Northeast Missouri State University, graduating with a degree in Business Administration and Accounting in 1974. Marv worked several years in Cedar Rapids as an accountant before becoming employed by the United States Postal Service in Ames. He worked as a carrier, clerk, and eventually as a window clerk at the Main Office from 1980 until he retired in 2003.

Marv has two sons from his first marriage, Jeff and Matt Hitchings. He married Nora Nelson in 1998.

Marv loved sports, especially baseball, and spent several summers coaching his sons' Little League teams. He loved watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and recently cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs. He also maintained a large garden for several years. Marv was handy in construction work after gaining experience with his dad and others during his high school summers.

Marv is survived by his wife of 26 years, Nora; sons Jeff (Allison) Hitchings, Waukee, IA, Matt (Steph) Hitchings, Des Moines, IA; stepdaughters, Nicole (John) Gade, Ankeny, IA and Kelly (Adam) Smith of St. Louis Park, MN; grandchildren, Claire, Molly, and Thomas Hitchings, Griffin and Evee Gade, Kylie Kaiser; one sister, Jeanette Gibson of Burlington, IA; one brother, Chuck Hitchings of La Porte City, IA and many nephews and nieces.

Preceding him in death were his parents and brothers James and Kenneth Hitchings.
