Avonelle Joyce Runyon Obituary

Avonelle J. Runyon, 94, our cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, peacefully passed away on January 30, 2025.

She was born on October 17, 1930, in Colcord, WV to the late Ashley (A.J.) and Claudia Halstead.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 43 years, Victor O. Runyon, and her brother Reginald C. Halstead.

Avonelle graduated from Clear Fork High School in 1948, and then went on to nursing school at Charleston General Hospital, graduating as an RN in 1951. During her career, she worked as a nurse in Charleston WV, Phoenix AZ, and Man ARH hospital in Man. Lastly, she worked at the Man Community Health clinic, lovingly caring for her patients for 45 years.

Avonelle’s unwavering faith guided her life and her love for her family. She read her Bible every night and had read it cover to cover countless times. She was a wonderful mother and inspiration to her daughters, her grandchildren, and all those who knew her. She had a strong, feisty spirit who could challenge you, laugh, and cut up with you, but also hold you accountable to high standards.

Her grandchildren loved talking and visiting with her because she was so young-at-heart and always kept up with the latest trends and fashions. In family gatherings, she would often leave the older adults and go hang out with the young folks, saying “those old fogies in there are all complaining about their ailments”. Avonelle was a wonderful, loving, colorful person who will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her three daughters Regina (Billy) Brothers, Ginger (Shane) Trahin, and Robin (Michael) Cazin. Eight grandchildren, Jonathan (Emma) Brothers, David Brothers, Rebecca (TC) Lowery, Kristin (Glenn) Hammons, Jarrod Trahin, John (Hannah) Trahin, Jenna (Ben) Lowe, and Rachel Cazin. Three great-grandchildren, Shane and Madeline Hammons, Myles Lowe; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A celebration of Avonelle’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at Krantz McNeely Funeral Home. Friends and family will start to gather an hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation to the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) association.
