Raymond J. Van Linden, of Marquette died on Sunday, November 11th on Veteran’s Day with his loved ones with him at the D. J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette. Mr Van Linden was born in Marquette at St Mary’s Hospital on October 6, 1931 to Raymond J Van Linden, Sr. and Beatrice (Vadnais) Van Linden and was a lifelong Marquette resident. Raised as an only child, his mother affectionately nicknamed him, Buffie. This name followed him all through life when he ran into family and friends from his youth. He graduated from Bishop Baraga Central High School in Marquette in 1949. He was working with his father at the family’s store when he decided to enlist in the Navy on January 10, 1951. He proudly served on the USS Knapp, traveling the oceans and seas around the world visiting six of the seven continents, passing through the Panama and Suez Canal. During his military tour, the ship participated in operations and missions in the Arctic Circle, Antarctica and Cuba as well as visited several ports in Europe, Asia and throughout the United States. He was honorably discharged and returned to Marquette on November 17, 1954. In July, 2015, he received the Korean Ambassador for Peace Medal for his service in the waters off Korea during the Korean Conflict. He remained in contact with his shipmates until his death attending ship reunions and receiving the USS Knapp quarterly newsletter. On February 19, 1955, he married Noreen Margaret Havican at St Peter‘s Cathedral in Marquette. They enjoyed and were blessed with many years together. In his early years, he also worked at the former Northland Hotel, the South Shore Railroad and in 1962 began a career with the State of Michigan Department of Corrections retiring after over 25 years of public service in January, 1988. He enjoyed his retirement years golfing, playing cards and spending time with his family and many friends. He followed all the Detroit sports teams and enjoyed reading. He was a member of St Peter’s Cathedral. He was a life member of the Marquette Elks Lodge for 61 years and a member of the Marquette American Legion Post 44 for 45 years. He leaves his children, Andrew, Karen (Dale) Miron, R. Paul, and Joseph (Maggie Mahoney) all of Marquette; his four grandchildren, Brian Van Linden, Lisa (Tony) Ghiringhelli, Andrea (Ryan) Miron Koch, and Kory Miron (Stephanie Vollmer); his great grandchildren, Miranda Webber, Vincent and Olivia Ghiringhelli, Campbell and Cooper Koch; his dear friend, Mary Downey; his sister-in-law, Margaret (Maggy) Havican; his half-brothers, Bob, Mark and Tom Van Linden; also several cousins including Clarence Giguere and Margaret Ann Parent, and his nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death besides his parents were his beloved wife of 46 years, Noreen in September, 2001; his in-laws, Dennis and Margaret Havican; his brother and sister-in-law, Dennis (Donna) Havican and brother-in- law, Emmett Havican. Friends may call at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, November 16th, where a parish prayer service will be recited at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 17th at 10:00 a.m. in St Peter Cathedral with Rev. Msgr. Michael Steber officiating. Entombment will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum. Pallbearers with be his children and grandchildren.
