Shirley J. Braun Obituary

Shirley J. Braun, née Sinclair, 83 of Osceola, died November 11, 2018 with her family by her side. Shirley was born in Vancouver, WA on February 26, 1935, the youngest of five children of Glen Elder and Frances Lily Sinclair. She was married to Charles Braun for 58 years of loving marriage. Shirley served in the US Navy and met Charles, also in the Navy, in Norfolk, Virginia. They were married in 1957 and after a short time living in Bremerton, WA, settled in Wisconsin. Shirley’s priorities were family and community. While living in Wausau, she served as den mother for the local Cub Scouts troop and as a Sunday school teacher in the First Presbyterian Church. In Osceola, Shirley was an active member in the Osceola Women’s Club (OWC), and in 1975 she was recruited to become the first professional librarian of what is now the Osceola Public Library. With some secondhand book shelves and books purchased by the OWC, they set up shop in two rooms of the Osceola Inn, and shortly afterward the location now known as the Emily Olson House on River Street. Shirley went about the business of supplying the residents of Osceola with literature to both educate and entertain. Shirley carried on her duties twelve years and resigned in 1987. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Frank Braun; father Glen Elder Sinclair; mother Frances Lily Gordon Sinclair; brother Clyde Gordon Sinclair and wife Cheryl; brother Frank Elder Sinclair and wife Bettie; brother Glendale Sinclair and wife Katherine; sister Frances Eva Nold and husband Stanly. Shirley is survived by her sons Gregory Braun of Osceola, Dale Braun and wife Elizabeth of Somerset, WI; Glen Braun and wife Karen of Seattle, WA; grandchildren Caitlin Tessman and husband Alex and son Dominik of River Falls, WI, Chelsea Veverka and husband Matthew of St. Paul, MN. A private service will be held at a later date to celebrate Shirley’s life. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made in honor of Shirley’s life-long joy of reading to the Mill Pond Learning Foundation, Inc. http://millpondlf.com/donate/ or by calling their offices at 715-294-3753.
