Verlon Eugene "Red" Anderton Obituary

Verlon Eugene "Red" Anderton, 87, a man of endearing character and compassionate spirit, passed away on January 24, 2025, in Lexington, Kentucky. Born on September 16, 1937, in Tullahoma, Tennessee, Red's journey was marked by laughter, love, and an unwavering commitment to family.

Before retiring, Red devoted 18 years of service as a shop foreman at the Falcon Coal Company in Breathitt County, Kentucky, where his work ethic was deeply appreciated by all who knew and worked with him. With a personality as vibrant as his nickname, Red infused every moment with joy and was famous for his ability to turn any situation into a fond memory with his fun and silly sense of humor. Passionate about sports, Red also enjoyed staying informed via the news, and he never missed a chance to take scenic trips back to Tennessee, with Gatlinburg holding a special place in his heart.

Red was a true family man. His loving heart embraced not only his cherished wife of over 50 years, Bonnie Jean, but also extended to his stepchildren, whom he raised with the same devotion as if they were his own. His role as a father was one he relished with every fiber of his being, and his love only multiplied with the arrival of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whose presence brought him great happiness.

Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife, Bonnie Jean Anderton; children, Teresa Anderton, Vernon Anderton, Sandy Deaton, Debbie Slover, and Mary Deaton; grandchildren, Gloria Block, Verlon Bowling, Ronald Slover, John Mack Slover, Raymond Slover, Jearld Slover, Nick Slover, Jonathan Hall, Kaylan Hall, Brandon Anderton, and Brenton Anderton; many great-grandchildren; and his sister, Rita Anderton Lawhead. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray Anderton and Laura Payne; son, Tommy Hall;  brothers, Evert Mullins, Virgil Mullins, and Arnold Anderton; and his sister, Linda Anderton.

Red will be remembered as loving, funny, and friendly—a beacon of light whose legacy of kindness and laughter will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have known him. A funeral will be held on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, 2:00 PM, at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, 463 East Main Street, Lexington, Kentucky, 40507, with Pastor Terry Joseph officiating. Interment will follow the service at Hillcrest Memorial Park with family and friends to serve as pallbearers. Visitation will be prior to the service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
