Gloria M. Stefano

<p>Gloria M. Stefano (Saltarez) passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 10, 2015. She was a resident of Menorah Park at the time. Gloria was born in the city of New York, and attended Bellevue School of Nursing through the Cadet Nurse Corps program, which was initiated during World War II. She graduated from Bellevue with the Class of 1947, the last graduating class of the Cadet Nurse Corps program. </p><p> Gloria and Nicola (Nick) Stefano were married at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan in 1950, and the couple eventually moved to Cortland, N.Y., where Gloria worked at Cortland Memorial Hospital as a registered nurse. The couple moved to Utica in 1958 and lived on Boyce Avenue; in 1961 they moved to Syracuse and built a house on Longmeadow Drive in the Valley area of the city (the “Valley Oaks” development). They lived on Longmeadow Drive for 35 years.</p><p> During their time in the Valley, Gloria was active in the Meacham School PTA. She was a den mother for the Cub Scouts and also for Webelos (Boy Scouts). In the 1960s Gloria worked as a “floater” nurse at Community General Hospital on Onondaga Hill, working in virtually every ward in the hospital depending on the need. She returned to school at Syracuse University in 1972 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. Soon after that she again returned to school, this time at Onondaga Community College. Following up on her lifelong interest, she completed an Associates Degree in Art. Throughout the rest of her life Gloria was an avid watercolorist, and completed over fifty watercolor paintings. She also studied watercolors with local artist Frederick Burns through the Fayetteville Senior Center, and her work was included in a number of local exhibits. </p><p> After retirement, Nick and Gloria moved to The Orchard condominium complex on Salt Springs Street in Fayetteville, where they lived for over 20 years. Gloria was predeceased by two brothers, William Saltarez and Wilson Saltarez. She is survived by her daughter, Angela (Stefano) Weiler and Gary Maggi; Ross and Janet (Stapleton) Stefano; and Nicholas and Alexandra (Cost) Stefano. She has six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. </p><p> Calling hours are from 1 to 3 p.m. on Monday, December 28, 2015 at Eaton-Tubbs-Schepp Funeral Home, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville. There will be a private funeral service immediately following, and the burial will be after the service in Immaculate Conception Cemetery. </p><p> Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Fayetteville Library, 300 Orchard St. Fayetteville, NY 13066, or to the Fayetteville Senior Center, 584 E Genesee St, Fayetteville, NY 13066.</p>
