Joseph N. Quaglia, 93 formerly of Mt. Penn, passed away November 12, 2015 in ManorCare Sinking Spring.


His wife, Helen M. (Franz) Quaglia, died in 2007.


Born in Birdsboro, he was the son of the late Pietro and Maria Quaglia.


Joseph was a graduate of Reading High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.



He first worked as a core maker for American Chain and Cable and later was employed as a carpenter for Charlie Nawa Construction. After retirement, his wife Helen, daughter Beverly and he purchased Bixler's Tavern, Mt. Penn and operated it for 12 years.


He enjoyed carpentry, playing the trumpet in the family band, dancing and spending time with his family.


Joseph is survived by two children: Maria “Sherri”, widow of John Hoffer, Reinholds; and Joseph, Jr., husband of Virginia Quaglia, Ocean Isle Beach, NC., three grandchildren: Bridget, J.C. and Jordan Quaglia and two siblings; Gelsia Franz and Jessie Brantley also survive him.



Joseph was predeceased by his daughter Beverly Moyer, in 1997, and six siblings: Jan, Julio, Gerlando, Jim, Joseph and Gina.


Services will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Heartland Hospice, 4 Park Plaza, Wyomissing, PA 19610, or Humane Society of Berks County, 1801 N 11th St, Reading, PA 19604. Edward J.
