Marianna Gredell Obituary

Marianna Gredell, 89, of Keokuk, died Sunday, November 11, 2018 at her home. She was born on September 19, 1929 on the family homestead in St. Patrick, MO, the daughter of Basil and Rachel Ellison Fryer. She attended Gravel Hill School in St. Patrick. Marianna moved to Keokuk in 1948 and met the love of her life, Joseph “Chewie’ Gredell. They were united in marriage on September 26, 1951 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Keokuk. He preceded her in death on January 11, 2011. She worked at Dryden’s in Keokuk for a short time. When she and Chewie started their family, she became a stay at home mom to care for her children. She dedicated herself to her family, making their house a loving home. In 1964, she started working as a cook at St. Vincent’s Catholic School and retired in 2003. She was a wonderful cook and made many children happy with the delicious food she made. Marianna was a faithful member of All Saints Catholic Church in Keokuk. Throughout the years she was actively involved in many church and catholic school organizations and activities. Marianna loved the St. Louis Cardinals. Her grandchildren were the sunshine of her life and she enjoyed playing Bingo, Canasta and Yahtzee with them. She is survived by one son, Ed Gredell and his wife Colleen, of Keokuk, two daughters, Mary Jo Morehouse and her husband Jim of Keokuk and Cathy Derr of Keokuk, one daughter-in-law, Luana Gredell of Muscatine, seven grandchildren, Eddie Joe Gredell and his wife Debbie of West Des Moines, Angela Gredell (Jason Otey) of Keokuk, Jennifer Hall of Des Moines, Sarah Roach of Keokuk, Amanda Searsen (Josh Long) of Keokuk Anna Searsen (Michael Rule) of Keokuk and Matt McElroy of Muscatine, thirteen great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews. Besides her husband she was also preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Ilene Fox, Millie Bishop, and Katie Coney, one brother, Henry Fryer, a daughter, Martha Ann Gredell, a son John Gredell, a great-grandson Tyler Roach and a great-great-granddaughter, Rhykin Hall. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 am on November 14 at the All Saints Catholic Church in Keokuk with Father Robert Lathrop officiating. Burial was in the Keokuk National Cemetery. Visitation was held after 3 p.m. on November 13th at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with the family meeting with friends from 6 – 8:30 p.m. A Christian Vigil Service was held at 8:15 pm at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Vincent’s Catholic School or to All Saints Catholic Church.
