Obituary Language

Deborah Sue Mocarsky (Thompson), daughter of Adam and Irma, died on January 12, 2025. She was preceded in death by her sisters Rebecca Andreo (Wright) and Audean Johns Bryan and brothers Stanley Johns and Guy Johns. Her absence is felt by her surviving family; her children Adam Thompson (Collin Rossi) and Nikki Thompson (Jody Kennell), her grandchildren, Chloe, Charlie, Leo, and Brentan. Her children send their love and support to some of her closest family and friends including, her sister Donna Johns-Thomas and cousin Barbara Brecht, her nephew Scott Thompson, her sisters’ children and their children and families, Dan Bryan and Tim Bryan, Christian Wright (Lisa, David, Epic, Kepler, and Sora), Daniel Wright (Alicia, Sagan, Wren, and Osric), Jonathan Wright (McKenzie and Owen), and Nicholas Wright (Jenevieve, Madelyn, Kellen, and Gwendolyn), and her sisters-in-spirit, Kym Chaffin and Jess Bixby, her sister Christine Thompson, and her children’s father, Stephen Thompson.

Our mother spent her life building families for countless children in the United States ensuring that the most vulnerable in our society had a fierce advocate. She loved her family and her friends, walking with an endless empathy for the sacred human condition which was the foundation of her life, her faith, and her career. She loved her birth and adoptive families deeply and reconnecting with that which she had thought lost was the greatest response to her biggest prayer.

She spoke often of her time at Davis & Elkins College and the lifelong friends who became her family in the mountains of West Virginia. Our mother was a proud sister of the Chi Omega sorority, and we learned many stories from “Arnold” about her sisters and their adventures and found her college Chi Omega jacket amongst her most cherished items after she passed. She enjoyed the Fall each year when the leaves turned and, in the Spring at Easter, she most looked forward to time spent reflecting on her faith and being in community with her beloved friends Jon and Toni Distefano and Barb and Lou Belldina - your faith and family values were a foundation and a guide for her entire life and role models for ours.

Our mom was proud of her service to others and her more than 40-year career in social services. She loved hockey (a lot) and other sports and was never afraid to be a woman who knew the rules, knew the players, and could call a game better than any man. She was most fond of her teams from Pittsburgh, especially her Penguins and spent her summers watching the grand cycling tours of Europe.

Mom mentioned the privilege she felt being able to bear witness for her sisters’ children and grandchildren; she said they brought her hope. Most of all our mom loved her wee beasties – Chloe, Charlie, Leo, and Brentan. You are her greatest legacy in this world; she loved watching you grow up, she loved living with you and being close to you when you needed her most, she loved cleaning up after you, she loved watching you do what you loved whether that was soccer or orchestra or the stage, she loved talking to you on the phone and hearing your voices and seeing your faces, she loved telling you stories and sharing her knowledge and wisdom with you. She loved hearing your stories and supporting you even when you didn’t know it. Nonnie loved you most.

Our mother was a bright light, and she was loved by all and we felt each of you. We will miss her. A celebration of her life is being planned for July of 2025 in Elkins, West Virginia.
