Wayne Robert “Bob” Kehl, 91, of Jacksonville, died Saturday, July 16, 2016, at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy. He was born October 26, 1924, in Jacksonville, the son of Lorenz S. “Puddy” and Freda Button Kehl. He married Dorothy Stanton on November 25, 1948, at the home of his parents in Jacksonville, and she preceded him in death on March 1, 2009. Bob is survived by four grandchildren, Sarah (Morgan) O’Brien of Orland Park, Sean S. (Kirsten) Ericksen of Smithfield, Virginia, Wayne Gardner and William Lee (Kerri) Gardner, both of Jacksonville; five great-grandchildren, Taylor Paul of Orland Park, Madeline Ann S. Ericksen and Grace Mary S. Ericksen, both of Smithfield, Virginia, and Elijah James Gardner and Caden William Gardner, both of Jacksonville. Bob was preceded in death by two sons, Floyd Joseph Gardner (surviving wife Sandy of Jacksonville,) and William Lee Gardner (surviving wife Judy [Eric] Ericksen of Lockport,) one infant daughter, Sandra Dean Kehl, one sister, Eileen Kehl, and two brothers, Lorenz Kehl, Jr. and Alfred Kehl. Bob served in the United States Navy during World War II, stationed in the Pacific Ocean. He owned and operated Bob Kehl Zephyr in South Jacksonville and the Triangle Club in Woodson. Bob also drove a bread truck for Sunbeam Bread, was a bartender at the Blackhawk, and worked as a courier at Jacksonville Savings Bank following his retirement. He was a longtime member and deacon at Central Christian Church in Jacksonville. Bob was a lifelong Cubs fan and enjoyed fishing and hunting, and getting together with his former co-workers from Jacksonville Savings Bank. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 25, 2016, at Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville. The family will meet friends from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Interment and military rites will be conducted following the service at Diamond Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Illinois Veterans’ Home at Quincy.
