Gerald Sherman French

Gerald Sherman French, 93, of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2025, just days shy of his 94th birthday.

Born on January 13, 1931, in Hampden, Maine, Gerald (known to most as Jerry) graduated from Hampden Academy in 1949. He honorably served his country in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955. His pursuit of education took him from the University of Maine to Penn State University, where he earned his degree in Meteorology in 1960.

Jerry's professional career was marked by dedication to public service and safety, working with Eastern Airlines and the National Weather Service. His expertise in meteorology and hydrology earned him the prestigious Silver Medal Award from the Department of Commerce in 1988 for his accurate predictions during Maine's significant flooding in April 1987.

Jerry was a devoted Freemason and Shriner, embodying the principles of brotherhood and charitable service. A man of diverse interests and community involvement, Jerry was an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Boy Scouts of America, and Centerboard Yacht Club. His love for outdoor activities extended to his membership in the Casco Bay Bike Club, and he shared his passion for music through the Downeasters and Southern Gateway Barbershop Choruses. He was known for telling an off color joke and making people laugh.

Jerry was predeceased by his beloved wife, Betsy French, brother Ed, and his son, Jerry Jr. He leaves behind a loving family including his children: daughter Betsy Medina and her husband Fernando; son William K. French; son Paul French and his wife Brooke Teller; and daughter Debbie Wilkinson and her husband Norm. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Ben Bowen, Andrew Purdy (wife Charley), Brandon Wilkinson (wife Alexa), and Nicki Wilkinson; and his great-grandchildren: Fiona, Graham, and Colin.

We will have a celebration of Jerry’s life in the spring.
