MCCAULEY, Joseph Gray
True to his nature, Joe (Duffy) died on his terms December 13th, 2024 at his home by the river, surrounded by family. Born August 30th, 1926, he was raised in Gananoque. Predeceased by his parents Pearl (Gray) & Joseph McCauley, siblings Charles (Gus), Christyn & Gordon, and his beloved wife, Mary (Shire).
Left to mourn are his children Judy Long (Murray), Linda Burns (Charles d.) & Joe (Jean McDonald). Proud grandfather to Ashley, Shari, Thomas, Marnie, Oliver, Fraser & Liem. He leaves many great & great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Joe’s youth was spent on the river delivering groceries, driving taxies and mowing lawns. He served his country in the Royal Canadian Navy (1946-1951) aboard the HMCS Magnificent. At the helm of McCauley Painting, he excelled at business, employing and starting many in the trades.
He encouraged and practised life-long learning, embracing an active retirement. Indeed, at 97, he poured concrete steps after being appalled by quotes. Newcomers fussed over “the elderly stone mason unable to retire” working at their neighbour’s home! At Mary’s side and after her death, he tended their extensive flower & vegetable gardens. His wood carvings will be treasured.
His ready advice and love, offered with a quick kind wit, will be missed. His was a life well-lived, true to himself, not worrying what others thought of him.
He and his family would like to thank the palliative home care team for respecting his wishes throughout. Special thanks to Dr. Brian Hart for his tender care. Joe requested no service and he has been cremated. A memorial garden party for Joe & Mary is planned for the spring.
