It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Debra Jewel "Phillips" Hough, who left this world on January 1, 2025, at UAB Highlands in Birmingham. Born on October 7, 1955, in Alabama, Debra lived a life filled with love, compassion, and unwavering strength. She was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, and her absence leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of all who knew her.
Debra was the beloved daughter of Miles and Lucille Phillips, who preceded her in death along with her son, Christopher Ellis, and her siblings: brothers Larry and Kenneth Nash, brother Jim Phillips, and sisters Sherry Hogeland and Diane Phillips. Though she faced the heartache of losing those dear to her, Debra remained resilient and continued to spread love and kindness.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Robert Hough, who stood by her side through all of life's challenges. Debra also leaves behind her loving children: son Steven Ellis (Kirsten) and daughter Mary "Renee" Kelley. Her legacy continues with her grandchildren, whom she adored and cherished deeply—Tara Sable (Robby), Justin Ellis, Trevor Ellis, Isaac Kelley, Macy Rickles (Drew), Layla Kelley, Cameron Kelley, Aubrey, and Corbin. Debra was also a proud great-grandmother to Lane Sable, whose smile brought her immense joy. As well as, her loving sister Teresa Martin (Gary).
For many years, Debra dedicated her life to caring for others as a nurse's aide with hospice. Her passion for helping those in need was evident in every aspect of her work. She embodied the spirit of compassion, always putting the well-being of others before her own. Debra was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, where her faith and connection to the community flourished.
Debra had a zest for life that was contagious. She loved craft shows, spending sunny days at the beach, and cheering on her grandchildren at ball games. An avid Alabama fan, she celebrated every victory with enthusiasm and pride. Debra's tough exterior masked a heart full of warmth and kindness, always making time to share joy with those around her.
A funeral service will be held in her honor at Blount County/Cleveland Funeral Home on January 6, 2025, at 2:00 PM, preceded by visitation from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM with Bro. Chris West officiating. Burial will follow in Hood Cemetery in Blountsville, Alabama. Family and friends are invited to come together to celebrate Debra's life, share stories, and reflect on the impact she made on so many lives.
In this time of sorrow, let us remember Debra Jewel Hough for the love she gave, the lives she touched, and the memories that will forever remain in our hearts. Though she may no longer be with us in body, her spirit will continue to inspire and guide us every day.
