With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Luther (Lou) Vernon Justus, age 83, on December 13, 2024, at Methodist Mansfield Hospital. Lou, a resident of The Terrace at MidTowne, lived a life filled with love, laughter, and a bit of everything in between.
Born on May 21, 1941, in Buchanan County, Lou was the son of the late Cecil Burton Justus and Mary Magdeline Lester Justus. With bright blue eyes and a zest for life, he was eager to explore the world. As the eldest of seven siblings, he embraced responsibility early on and carried it with pride throughout his life.
At 18, Lou moved to Chicago, IL, where he worked tirelessly and eventually retired as a Foreman in 2006. Lou held multiple jobs, enjoyed swimming, and celebrating life. He loved his family and people unconditionally and would do anything for them. He believed in the principle: if you say something, you do it. He cherished spending time with his family. Lou loved shooting pool, bowling, riding bikes, swimming, playing cards, and board games, and was very competitive in everything he did.
Lou was well-known for coaching youth baseball at Pottawattomie Park in Rogers Park, Illinois. He loved discussing sports, especially his favorite teams, the Chicago Cubs and Bears, and enjoyed engaging in conversations with everyone he met. You would never see Lou without a cap on his head, either Bears or Cubbies. Most recently, he received a Texas Rangers cap from his grandson Tony. Lou also enjoyed a frequent Budweiser, his favorite beer.
In 2016, Lou moved to Texas to live with his daughter. During his time at The Terrace at MidTowne, he made many friends, played countless games of bingo, and enjoyed delicious meals. He cherished sitting on his patio, smoking cigars, and watching the world go by.
