Helen Fujiko (Abo) Sweeney, 86, of South Windsor and formerly of East Hartford, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 13,  2024 at home.  Helen was the widow of the late John Sweeney of East Hartford where they lived most of their lives and raised their children.

Born September 3, 1938 in Tacoma, Washington, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Hatsuyo Abo.  After enduring interment at Tule Lake, CA during World War II, she emigrated to East Hartford CT in 1945 with her family.  It was there that she later met and married John Sweeney on July 1, 1961.  Helen and John traveled extensively around the world during their time together including to her favorite places, Hawaii and Iceland.  After being a homemaker for her children’s formative years, Helen was employed by Krause Caterers of East Hartford until she retired at age 70.  Helen was very artistic and she enjoyed painting, sewing, flower arranging, and baking.

Helen is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Kim Sweeney of Florida and Kristin Sweeney-Bizier and Richard Bizier of South Windsor, five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on  Saturday, December 21, 2024 at 10:00 at St. Francis of Assisi Church of the St.Junipero Serra Parish on 673 Ellington Rd. South Windsor.  Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery Hebron Ave Glastonbury.  Calling hours will be held at the church one hour prior to the Mass, from 9:00 to 10:00 am.
