James G. Sylvester, a man whose adventurous spirit and generous heart left a lasting mark on all who knew him, passed away unexpectedly on December 13, 2024, in Englewood, Florida. Born on July 20, 1961, in Bay City, Michigan, to Gerald J. and V. Jean (Droptiny) Sylvester, James grew up with a zest for life that was evident from a young age.
He shared his journey with his soul mate, Kim, whose love and companionship provided him with immeasurable joy. He leaves behind two sons James Jr. and Chris, who gave James the cherished title of “ Grandpa” to four grandchildren Stacy, Nick, Aiden, and Elijah. His role as our family rock extended to his siblings, Michael E, David G, Paul D, and Gerald Jr Sylvester; Maxine (Larry) Sequin, Ramona (David) Grillo, and Amy (Chad) Histed, as well as to his numerous nieces and nephews. James was predeceased by his sister, Julie M. Sylvester, whose memory remained close to his heart.
James was a man of many talents and interests. He owned and operated a successful excavation business, where he combined his love for hard work with his innate ability to fabricate and build. His professional expertise was matched only by his determination and the respect he garnered from his colleagues and associates in the industry.
His passion for life was not confined to his work. James thrived in the outdoors and found great pleasure in swamp buggy races, boating, air boating, and spending time in the Everglades. He was also a firearms enthusiast, a hobby that reflected his precision and respect for craftsmanship. Those who knew James often found themselves on the receiving end of his playful jests, as giving everyone a hard time was done so in his signature good-natured style.
Thoughtful in his actions, James had a knack for making those around him feel seen and heard. He approached life with a sense of adventure that was contagious, often inspiring others to step outside their comfort zones and embrace new experiences. His generosity knew no bounds, whether it was through his time, resources, or the wisdom he eagerly shared.
James will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for the laughter, wisdom, and moments of exhilaration he brought into our lives. His legacy will continue through the lives of his family, the business he built, and the countless memories cherished by all who were fortunate enough to cross his path.
