Greenwood, SC- Jeanette Norma Hawes Humphries, 100 blessed years old, of 611 Lorenzo Road, widow of Henry Humphries, peacefully transitioned from earth to heaven on Friday, December 13, 2024, at her home. Born in Greenwood, South Carolina on August 30, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Ulysses Grant Hawes and Derquis Moragne Hawes.
At an early age, Mrs. Humphries accepted Christ into her life and joined Cross Road Baptist Church. She later became a member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully and sang on the sanctuary choirs until her health declined. Her passion for lifting the name of Jesus through song also led her to join the Greenwood Martin Luther King, Jr. Mass Choir. She participated in the annual MLK Jr. celebration by singing and leading the way along the parade route.
Throughout her long and productive life, Mrs. Humphries found joy in celebrating with her family and friends and traveling near and far on The Greyhound Bus. A fun-loving person, she adored spending time at the Piedmont Agency on Aging over the years making friends, helping prepare meals, and playing her favorite game, BINGO. In years past, she supported and often traveled with the National Federation of the Blind of South Carolina. A talented crocheter, Mrs. Humphries blessed many in her family and community with blankets to not only warm their bodies, but also their hearts.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Wyatt Cornell Hawes, her siblings and in-laws, Joseph Odell (Mary Alice) Hawes, Willie Earl Hawes, Eula Beatrice (Marvin) Bryant, Clara Etoid (Herman) Smith, and Dorothy Vernice Dowtin.
She leaves to cherish her most precious and fond memories, one daughter, Jessie Lee Hawes of Greenwood, SC; one sister, Annie Hawes Evans of the home; one brother-in-law, James D. Dowtin, Jr. of Temple Hills, Maryland; one grandchild, Ariston Lamont (Antonnia) Jones of LaGrange, GA; two great grandchildren, Arrienne Zakerria (Larry) Anderson, and Ariston Jontrei Jones; three great grandchildren, Aubree Zendaya Anderson, Liana Daya Anderson, and Scotlyn Alaya Anderson; a special niece and caregiver, Toi Cheeks, a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends to mourn her passing.
Services for Mrs. Humphries will be 12:00 PM on Friday, December 20, 2024, at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Deloris Henderson and presided by Rev. Annette Edwards. Viewing will be from 1-6 PM Thursday, December 19, 2024, at Robinson and Son Mortuary, Inc. Online condolences may be sent to robson@nctv.com.
