Elizabeth Rose (Shuman) Tighe, after a century of living life to the fullest, passed away on Friday, December 13, 2024. Elizabeth was known by many as “Boady” or “Aunt Boady”. She was born in Spring Grove on March 11, 1924 to Eugene Shuman and Margaret (Allen) Shuman.
She graduated from York Catholic High and studied nursing at St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing in New York, New York. She married James W. Tighe in June, 1945, upon his return from his service in World War II, where he spent nearly a year as a prisoner of war. They had been married for 53 years when he passed away in 1998.
Boady’s nursing career ranged from private practice to the teaching environment of York Hospital’s Family Practice. She was a practicing Catholic all of her life. Upon retirement she began her second “career” as a (volunteer) client advocate for the Pregnancy & Family Resource Center from its inception in 1990. In 2014 she was presented the first Msgr. Brenner Award for Respect for Life in Word and Action. Her volunteer years continued into her early 90’s.
Boady touched an incredible number of people in so many ways as a daughter, sister, nurse, friend, mentor, co-worker, wife, aunt, great-aunt and great-great-aunt. Any of those who knew her touted her vivid story-telling ability!
Boady was the last surviving of 7 siblings: William Helfrich, Margaret Shuman Burger, Mary Catherine Shuman (Sr. Annette), Eugene Shuman, Edward Shuman (Fr. Killian), Joan Shuman Cederberg, and herself. While she and Jimmy were not blessed with children, she was a loving aunt, and at times, surrogate mother to her many nieces and nephews over seven decades. Many of them and many friends gathered in March of 2024 to celebrate her 100th birthday with lively conversation and legendary story telling.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Patrick’s Church, 231 South Beaver Street on Friday, December 20th, at 10 a.m. Burial at Holy Savior Cemetery will follow the Mass.
