John Edward Jones Obituary

John Edward Jones, Jr of Corpus Christi, TX passed away peacefully on the morning of December 13, 2024 , in Houston, TX , after a long illness.

John, nicknamed “Chipper”, was born in St Louis, MO, on September 5th, 1956. He was the middle child and only son of the late Hattie (née) Althouse and John Edward Jones, Sr.

John, “Chipper” was raised and educated in St Louis. The family attended the Antioch Baptist Church where he was active in youth activities including Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Junior Ushers.

He graduated from Southwest High School where he played drums,

basketball, and ice hockey. He learned to hunt, shoot and fish with his dad with whom he shared a love of guns, jokes, cooking and storytelling.

John continued his education at the University of Missouri Rolla.

It was here that John pledged and joined Omega Psi Phi Fraternity , Omicron Sigma Chapter on December 22, 1977 - one of his proudest moments. He would remain fiercely devoted to his fraternity and his fraternity brothers throughout the remainder of his life.

A civil engineering career led him to Corpus Christi, Texas where he met and in April 1994 married Mechelle Madison, becoming a devoted family man and father to Adrianna and Chester and eventually his adored son John Edward Jones, III “Bear”. Baby daughter, Janae Mechelle Jones, predeceased John III, and although the marriage ended in divorce he and Mechelle continued as friends and co-parents.

John worked for the City of Corpus Christi, TX for thirty years as a well- respected Civil Inspector.

He was a member of the St Paul United Methodist Church in Corpus Christi, and was also actively involved with Gamma Chi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in that city.

He was an avid fan of Classic R and B music - The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross and more.

He enjoyed fishing off the South Padre Island coast with friends, life with his family and nurturing the development of “Bear’s” golf skills and achievements. He attended every golf-related “Bear” event his schedule allowed him to attend.

John loved a good joke, cooking, sports and anything to do with his fraternity or frat brothers.

In his later years, he was plagued by health issues which limited/ restricted his ability to physically attend events but never dampened his enthusiasm.

John’s journey culminated in his peaceful transition on December 13, 2024 in Houston, TX.

John’s survivors include his son “Bear”, step children Adrianna Blair and Chester Blair, Jr. and their mother Mechelle Boson all of Texas;

his sisters Vanessa Antoinette Jones of Oklahoma and Dominica Jones-Samuels, brother-in-law John K. Samuels, III , niece and nephew Jordan Tyran and John K. (Jake) Samuels, IV all of New York City;  cousin Martiné "Marty" Dunn of Ohio , Aunts Helen Jones, Ceola Hill, Gwen McKinney and Nancy Hill of Missouri , and many other cousins, family members, friends, fraternity brothers and relations.

John touched many people , had an infectious personality and smile and loved to tell a good story. He was a great father, a great friend and a gentleman.

He was loved and he will be missed.

« And now I know not what to do,

with here my shattered heart,

but take the pieces and love you,

with every broken part…. «
